Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Three years later.

The afternoon sun filtered through the leaves of the large jacaranda tree in our backyard, casting beautiful purple shadows over the grass.

A long wooden table was set up under the shade, laden with food—fresh tamales, bowls of guacamole, and a beautiful three-tiered birthday cake. Today was Santiago’s third birthday.

Our backyard was filled with laughter. We had invited our new neighbors, my colleagues from work, and the few true friends who had stood by us during the dark times.

Santiago ran across the lawn, his tiny legs moving as fast as they could, chasing a colorful balloon.

"Daddy! Look! I catch it!" he yelled, his face lit up with pure, unadulterated joy.

"Go get it, champion!" I laughed, leaning back in my chair.

Valeria sat beside me, her hand resting gently on her belly. She was five months pregnant with our second child—a little girl we planned to name Elena, after the doctor who had saved Valeria and Santiago’s lives.

Valeria looked radiant. The hollow, terrified girl from three years ago was gone, replaced by a strong, confident woman who carried herself with a quiet grace. She wore her grandmother's silver rosary around her neck, a symbol of survival and strength.

She leaned her head against my shoulder, and I wrapped my arm around her, kissing the top of her head.

"Are you happy, Miguel?" she whispered.

"I have everything I ever wanted," I said, looking at our son, at her, and at the beautiful, peaceful life we had built from the ruins of my past. "I am the happiest man alive."

"We did it," she said, squeezing my hand. "We survived."

"We did," I agreed.

As Santiago successfully captured his balloon and ran toward us, throwing his tiny arms around our legs, I knew that the shadow of my mother’s cruelty would never darken our lives again. We had faced the deepest darkness, and we had come out into the light.

We were a real family. Bound not by blood or control, but by a love so fierce it could never be broken.
