Chapter 6 - The Turning Point at My Parents' House

The certified mail delivery arrived at my parents' house on a crisp Tuesday afternoon. According to the tracking receipt signed by my father, the legal packet containing the evidence of Nick’s fraud and forgery was handed directly into his trembling hands.

I was at my office downtown when my phone buzzed with an incoming call from my father’s personal cell number. For a second, I hesitated. But the caller ID showed only his name, unaccompanied by my mother or Nick.

I swiped to answer. "Hello, Dad."

There was a long, heavy silence on the other end of the line, broken only by the sound of ragged, uneven breathing. When my father finally spoke, his voice sounded broken, older, and completely drained of all fight.

"I read the papers, Victoria," he whispered.

My heart tightened slightly, but I kept my voice calm and steady. "Then you know what Nick has been doing behind your backs for years. It wasn't just unpaid rent, Dad. It was gambling, high-interest debt, and forged signatures."

Another long pause followed. I could hear muffled shouting in the background—my mother’s shrill voice arguing with Nick in the next room, followed by a loud crash as something hit a wall.

"Your mother tried to hide the delivery from me," my father continued, his voice suddenly hardening with a strange, unfamiliar resolve. "She said it was just another one of your lawyer's 'empty threats.' But I opened it. I saw the bank statements. I saw the online betting receipts from the exact dates you sent money for the kids' groceries. I saw... I saw his signature forgery on that car loan."

"I'm sorry you had to see it, Dad," I said honestly. "I didn't want to hurt you, but I had to protect myself and Tyler."

"You did the right thing," my father murmured, a bitter chuckle escaping his lips. "God help me, Victoria, you did the right thing. For thirty years, I covered for him. I made excuses for him. I let your mother coddle him until he turned into a parasite who thinks the entire world owes him a living. And now... now our house is destroyed, our retirement savings are gone because we tried to help him pay off his secret debts last year, and your mother still refuses to see the truth."

"Dad, you can still step away," I urged gently. "You don't have to carry this burden for him anymore."

"It's too late for me, sweetheart," my father sighed heavily. "Your mother and Nick are screaming in the living room right now because Nick wants to steal my car keys to drive to a casino to 'win back the money.' Can you believe that? Even now, with eviction notices and fraud charges hanging over his head, that's all he thinks about."

"Then let him go," I said firmly. "Call the police if he tries to steal your car. You have rights in your own home, Dad."

Before my father could reply, the line was abruptly snatched away.

My mother’s voice came screaming through the speaker, shrill and hysterical with blind rage. "Victoria! You ungrateful, malicious witch! How dare you send police threats and fraud accusations to your own brother? What kind of sister are you? You are tearing this family apart over a childish grudge!"

"Mother, listen to me very carefully," I said, my voice cutting through her screaming like a razor-sharp blade. "Nick is a criminal who forged my signature and stole thousands of dollars from me under false pretenses. If you or he ever contact me, my son, or my office again, my attorney will file criminal charges with the district attorney's office within twenty-four hours. Consider this your final warning."

I didn't wait for her hysterical response. I hit the red end button, blocking her number permanently.

That evening, as I sat at the kitchen table helping Tyler with his homework, my phone buzzed with a text message from an unknown number. It wasn't my mother or Nick. It was a brief message from my father:

“I called the police when Nick tried to take my car. He and Jessica packed their bags and left an hour ago. Your mother is crying in her room. Thank you for opening my eyes, Victoria. I am so, so sorry.”

I stared at the screen, a quiet wave of closure washing over my soul. The cycle of coddling, manipulation, and emotional blackmail was finally, irrevocably broken.

What I didn't realize was that Nick’s reckless downward spiral was about to reach its inevitable rock bottom—forcing my mother to finally face the bitter reality of the monster she had created, and setting the stage for an unexpected, humbling reconciliation.
