Chapter 6 - The Public Execution

The Los Angeles Convention Center was packed with over five hundred high-profile guests, government officials, corporate titans, and reporters. The main event was the high-stakes public bidding for the multi-billion-dollar Port Revitalization Contract.
I arrived in a sleek black suit, flanked by Marcus and four private security guards. As I walked down the red carpet toward the main hall, reporters swarmed me, shoving microphones into my face.
"Mr. Cole! Are the allegations made by your wife true?"
"Ethan! Is it true you locked your mother away?"
"Are you going to resign as CEO?"
I kept my eyes fixed straight ahead, maintaining a calm, unbothered expression, refusing to give them a single reaction.
Inside the grand ballroom, Victoria was sitting at a VIP table near the front stage, wearing a stunning red silk dress paid for with my money. She was holding hands with Brandon Sterling, while her father, Senator Arthur Vance, stood nearby, chatting smugly with local city officials.
When Victoria saw me walk in, she leaned back and flashed me a cold, triumphant smile. She raised her glass of champagne toward me in a silent mock toast. You lost, her eyes said.
I sat down at my reserved table near the back.
The City Director took the podium. "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the final bidding for the Greater Los Angeles Port Revitalization Project. We will now accept the sealed final offers from our two primary qualified contenders: Sterling Global Holdings and Cole Enterprises."
Brandon Sterling stood up, smoothing his designer suit jacket. He walked to the stage with immense swagger and handed a thick leather-bound envelope to the director.
"Sterling Global Holdings bids one point two five billion dollars!" Brandon announced loudly into the microphone, looking back at me with absolute contempt. "And we are prepared to begin immediate construction!"
The room erupted into applause. It was a massive bid—far higher than anyone had anticipated.
The director looked toward my table. "Mr. Cole? Does Cole Enterprises wish to submit a counter-bid?"
The entire room turned to look at me. Cameras flashed furiously. Victoria leaned forward, eager to watch me suffer the humiliation of being outbid on national television.
I stood up slowly, buttoning my suit jacket. I walked down the center aisle toward the stage, my heavy footsteps breaking the silence of the room.
I reached the podium, looked directly at Brandon, then at Victoria, and finally at Senator Vance.
"Cole Enterprises..." I began, my voice carrying clearly through the microphone, "...will not be submitting a bid for this project."
A wave of shocked whispers rippled through the audience.
Brandon smirked. "Smart choice, Ethan. You knew you couldn't compete with real capital."
"I didn't refrain from bidding because I lacked capital, Brandon," I said smoothly, pulling a small black remote control from my pocket. "I refrained from bidding because the port land is contaminated with six thousand tons of toxic industrial waste. Any company that buys that land is legally bound by federal law to cover the cleanup costs—which my environmental team estimates at roughly two point four billion dollars."
Brandon’s smile instantly evaporated. "What? That's impossible! The environmental report says—"
"The environmental report your mistress stole from my home office was a forgery," I interrupted, my voice ringing out across the quiet hall. "A fake document I specifically left out to catch a thief."
The room gasped.
I pressed the button on the remote control. The massive LED screens behind the stage suddenly lit up, replacing the official event logos with high-definition video footage.
The room watched in complete, horrified silence as the video began playing.
It was the security footage from my mansion backyard.
On the 80-foot screens, Victoria Vance’s voice blasted through the convention center speakers in crystal-clear audio:
“Eat up, old woman! Ethan’s not here to save you today... A street beggar like you doesn't belong in a house this nice anyway!”
The footage showed my frail, trembling mother sitting on the concrete, crying as Victoria kicked her plate of rice and chicken bones across the dirt.
The audience gasped in collective horror. Reporters frantically pointed their cameras at the screen, then swung them around to focus on Victoria, whose face had gone completely ghostly white.
"Turn it off! Turn it off right now!" Senator Vance screamed, springing from his seat and rushing toward the production team.
"Wait, there's more," I said calmly, pressing the button again.
The screen shifted to the financial ledgers.
"These are the bank records showing Victoria Vance embezzling four million dollars from the Margaret Cole Charity Foundation to pay off illegal gambling debts in Las Vegas," I explained coldly. "And these are the audio files of Senator Arthur Vance attempting to blackmail me yesterday, threatening to use state regulatory agencies to destroy my company unless I covered up his daughter's crimes."
Audio played through the speakers: “I control the government that allows your empire to exist! Do not test me, Ethan!”
The hall turned into utter chaos. Federal agents in plain clothes, who had been sitting quietly near the back doors, immediately stood up and moved down the aisles.
"Arthur Vance, Victoria Vance, and Brandon Sterling," an FBI special agent declared, stepping onto the stage with his badge drawn. "You are all under arrest for federal fraud, corporate espionage, charity embezzlement, and criminal extortion."
Victoria began screaming hysterically as handcuffs were slapped onto her wrists. "Ethan! Please! Ethan, help me! I love you! It was Brandon's idea! He made me do it!"
Brandon violently pushed her away as agents restrained him. "Shut up, you crazy bitch! You brought me into this!"
Senator Arthur Vance collapsed back into his chair, clutching his chest as news crews surrounded him, snapping thousands of photos of his ultimate disgrace.

I stood on the stage, looking down at the people who had tried to crush my mother under their heels.
"You thought my mother was weak because she was humble," I said quietly into the microphone as they were dragged away in chains. "But her strength built me. And my strength just destroyed you."
