Chapter 4 - The Unwelcome Guests

The atmosphere in the foyer instantly shattered. My friends in the dining room fell silent as the sudden tension rippled through the apartment.

Daniel did not step back. He stood squarely in the doorway, blocking their path into our home. His expression was made of carved granite.

"You are not welcome here," Daniel said clearly, his voice carrying straight into the living space.

Mom stepped forward, inserting herself into the doorway with an air of absolute authority. "Daniel, don't be rude. We are here to resolve this childish feud like adults. Claire is acting out, and you are enabling her. We need to talk about the wedding."

"There is nothing to talk about," I said, stepping up beside Daniel. I caught Vivian's eye. She was looking past Daniel's shoulders, scanning our beautifully decorated apartment with an unmistakable look of envy.

"Claire, darling," Mom said, her tone dripping with false maternal warmth that made my skin crawl. "Look at you, playing house. You've made your point. You ran away, you made us worry. But it's time to come back to reality. Your sister has suffered enough."

"Suffered?" I echoed. "Vivian tried to steal my fiancé!"

"He was mine first!" Vivian blurted out, dropping her soft facade for a split second, her eyes flashing with anger. "He was interested in me three years ago! If I hadn't been distracted by my career, you wouldn't even be standing next to him!"

Daniel let out a sharp, cold laugh. "Distracted by your career? Vivian, you left our date to meet a guy who owned a sports car. You literally told me to pay for your cocktail while you walked out the door. I didn't pursue you. I was relieved to get rid of you."

Vivian’s face flushed bright red. "That’s not true! You were heartbroken!"

"I met Claire six months later," Daniel said, looking down at me with genuine warmth before facing Vivian again with total disdain. "And from the moment I met her, I realized what a real, intelligent, graceful woman looked like. You don't hold a candle to her, Vivian. Not then, not now, not ever."

Mom’s face contorted in rage. "How dare you speak to my daughter like that! She is twice the woman Claire will ever be! Claire has always been a bitter, second-rate shadow in this family!"

"And that is why she is leaving your family behind," Daniel said calmly. He reached to his side and grabbed his phone, tapping the screen to reveal a live recording app. "Every word of this interaction is being recorded, Linda. You hit Claire on Thanksgiving. Now you are trespassing and harassing us. If you do not turn around and leave this property in five seconds, I am calling the police and pressing charges for assault from November, alongside trespassing tonight."

Mom froze. Her eyes went wide as she realized the consequences of her actions stepping out of the domestic sphere into the legal one.

"You wouldn't," she breathed.

"Try me," Daniel replied smoothly. "Five. Four..."

Vivian caught her mother's arm, panic suddenly washing over her. She knew a police report would destroy her social standing and her self-crafted image of perfection. "Mom, let's go. He's crazy. He's been brainwashed by her."

Mom glared at me with pure hatred. "You are no daughter of mine, Claire. You are dead to this family."

May you like

"Good," I said, holding her gaze without flinching. "Then stop visiting a ghost."

Daniel closed the door firmly in their faces and clicked the deadbolt into place.
