Chapter 7 - The New Beginning

Six months passed.

The transition was not without its legal battles, but as Sebastian had predicted, my mother’s case had no legs to stand on. The video deposition left by my grandfather was devastatingly clear, and the public nature of her behavior at the anniversary luncheon had alienated any potential allies she might have had. She eventually settled, taking a modest trust fund that my grandfather had set aside for her on the condition that she relinquish all future claims to the estate and the family name. She relocated to a small, private condo in Palm Beach, far away from the Charleston society that had quietly turned its back on her.

My father stayed in the guest cottage. He had aged, but he looked happier than I had ever seen him. He spent his days working in the garden, planting vegetables and helping Sebastian restore an old wooden boat they had found in the carriage house. He had finally escaped the prison of his wife’s expectations, and he was content to live a quiet, simple life close to his grandchildren.

The main house underwent a transformation of its own. We didn’t sell it; instead, we decided to make it a place that actually lived up to my grandfather’s dream of a "home of unity."

We repainted the dark, formal rooms in bright, warm colors. We sold off the stiff, uncomfortable antique furniture that my mother had forbidden anyone to sit on, replacing it with deep, comfortable sofas where the kids could lounge and play. The white roses in the garden were joined by wild, colorful hydrangeas, sunflowers, and a large vegetable patch that my father tended with Camila.

One Saturday afternoon, we decided to host our first real gathering at the house. It wasn’t a formal luncheon with silver trays and silent waiters; it was a backyard barbecue for Camila’s entire third-grade class, along with our neighbors, my aunt Evelyn, and several of the cousins who had reached out to apologize for their silence that day.

The backyard was filled with the sound of children laughing, music playing from a small Bluetooth speaker, and the smell of burgers grilling on the patio.

I stood by the grill, watching the scene with a deep, peaceful warmth in my chest.
