Chapter 2 - The House of Glass

The drive to Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital felt like it lasted a lifetime. In the back of the ambulance, the rhythmic hiss of the oxygen delivery system and the frantic blips of the heart monitor were the only sounds filling the small space. Ethan was too weak to cry anymore; his breathing was shallow and ragged, a terrifying rasp that seemed to claw at my chest with every cycle.
I sat on the narrow bench opposite the medical cot, holding Claire’s hand in a tight, unyielding grip. Her head rested against my shoulder, the thin foil blanket crinkling softly with every bump in the road.
"They took everything, Daniel," she whispered into the fabric of my jacket. Her voice was little more than a dry rasp. "The baby book your grandmother made. The ultrasound pictures from the third month. Your deployment letters... they burned them in the backyard fire pit two weeks ago. They said I didn't deserve to keep reminders of you because you had 'abandoned' us for the military."
My jaw tightened until the bone ached. "They won't ever touch another thing of ours. Elena has already initiated a total asset freeze on all of Margaret's accounts. Every property, every vehicle, every stock portfolio she tied to her name through family trusts—it’s all under court injunction as of twenty minutes ago."
Claire looked up, her good eye wide with a mixture of disbelief and lingering terror. "Can she actually do that? Your mother... she has connections everywhere in this city. Half the judges are members of her charity board."
"Elena isn't a local attorney," I replied, staring out the tinted back window of the ambulance as the city lights blurred into streaks of amber and white. "She’s a federal estate litigator who specializes in military family exploitation. Margaret spent thirty years bullying people who couldn't afford a counter-suit. She forgot that federal protection statutes don't care about country club politics."
When the ambulance finally backed into the hospital bay, a trauma team was waiting. They swarmed the vehicle with the practiced precision of a combat medical unit. Within seconds, Ethan was whisked through the double doors of the pediatric intensive care unit, trailing IV lines and monitor leads.
Claire and I were led to a small, sterile family waiting room down the hall.
A nurse brought us two paper cups of water and a warm blanket for Claire, but before we could even take a breath, the door opened and Elena Brooks walked in, holding a sleek black tablet under her arm.
"The booking process is complete," Elena said without preamble, taking a seat across from us. She opened the tablet and slid it across the low coffee table. "Your mother and sister are currently being held without bail at the county detention center. The magistrate took one look at the nursery footage and the medical logs from the infant's chart. He didn't even let their defense attorney speak."
I leaned forward, studying the digital docket summary on the screen. "Did they make a statement?"
"Vanessa is already turning on your mother," Elena said, a faint, humorless smile touching the corner of her mouth. "Standard cowardice. Within twenty minutes of being placed in a holding cell, she told the duty sergeant that Margaret was the mastermind behind the forged deed and the deliberate isolation of your wife. She claims Margaret threatened to cut her out of the family trust if she didn't help intimidate Claire."
Claire clutched her water cup so tightly her knuckles turned white. "She watched them do it, Elena. Vanessa stood there drinking wine while Margaret held me down against the floorboards. She laughed when I begged for the phone."
"Then Vanessa will have plenty of time to contemplate her humor in federal custody," Elena said smoothly. She tapped the screen, bringing up a second set of documents. "Now, Daniel, we need to talk about the house. Because the property is held in a protected military trust under your sole name, your mother’s forged deed is legally null and void. However, she has spent the last six weeks moving her personal belongings into the master suite and changing the primary security codes."
"Change the locks tonight," I said instantly. "Hire a private security detail to clear out her property and put it in storage. I don't want a single trace of her left inside those walls."
"It's already in motion," Elena replied, standing up and buttoning her blazer. "I have a crew arriving at the property at dawn. Furthermore, we are filing an immediate restraining order preventing Margaret, Vanessa, or any of their associates from coming within five hundred yards of you, your wife, your son, or any property you own."
She paused at the door, turning back to look at me with a serious, evaluating gaze.
"You've been out of the country for eight months, Daniel. The legal battle to dismantle your mother's control over your family estate is going to be brutal. She’s wealthy, she’s vindictive, and she has nothing left to lose. Are you prepared to go all the way with this?"
May you like
I looked down at Claire, whose head was resting against my chest again, her breathing finally growing steady as the shock began to recede into exhaustion. Then I thought of my son fighting for air in the ICU, victimized by the very people who were supposed to protect him.
"Tell the prosecutor I want every single charge pressed to the maximum extent of the law," I said. "No plea deals. No leniency."
