Chapter 9 - Building Our Forever

With my new position as charge nurse and our stable, peaceful routine, I finally felt financially secure enough to take the next big step: looking into buying a small house of our own. No more landlords, no more shared walls—just a modest little place with a backyard where my daughter could plant a real garden and a golden retriever could run around.
We spent our weekends driving through quiet, tree-lined neighborhoods, looking at open houses with wide-eyed excitement. My daughter carried a small notebook where she rated every kitchen (based on cookie-baking potential) and every backyard (based on treehouse viability).
“This one!” she shouted on a sunny Saturday afternoon, pointing excitedly at a charming, pale yellow cottage with a white picket fence and a massive oak tree in the front yard. “This is the one, Mom!”
I walked up the front steps, unlocking the door with the realtor’s key. Inside, the sunlight poured through large bay windows, illuminating hardwood floors and a cozy living room fireplace. There was no heavy laundry basket waiting by the door, no critical voice echoing down the hallway, and no shadow of intimidation. Just space to breathe, grow, and love.
“What do you think?” the realtor asked, smiling at us.
I looked down at my daughter, who was already spinning in circles in the middle of the empty living room, her laughter echoing off the walls.

“I think,” I said, pulling her into a tight hug, “this is exactly where we belong.”
We made the offer that very evening, and within a month, the keys were officially ours.
