Chapter 10 - A Bright Horizon

Two years have passed since that afternoon in the garden cafe, and our lives have blossomed into something truly extraordinary.
Our home in Guadalajara is filled with the sounds of laughter, music, and the patter of little running feet. Valentina is now three years old—a bright, fearless, and incredibly joyful little girl with a sharp mind, a kind heart, and skin as warm and beautiful as sun-kissed honey. She speaks both Spanish and a few introductory phrases of indigenous greetings she learned during our yearly family trips back to Oaxaca, where we continue to nurture close ties with Diego’s biological relatives.
Diego transformed his professional life as well, stepping away from the stifling corporate circles dominated by his mother's former social set to launch an independent cooperative supporting artisans and agricultural communities across Jalisco and Oaxaca. He has never looked happier or more grounded in his true identity.
As for Graciela, she lives quietly in a modest apartment on the outskirts of the city, dedicating her time to local charities and volunteer work—a quiet, self-imposed path toward redemption and humility. We occasionally allow her supervised visits with Valentina during major holidays, maintaining healthy, guarded boundaries that ensure our daughter is always surrounded by safety and respect.
Tonight, as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of violet, orange, and gold, I sit on our back patio swing with a cup of herbal tea. Valentina is fast asleep in her room, cradled peacefully in her crib after a long day of playing in the garden.
Diego walks out onto the patio, wrapping a warm knitted shawl gently around my shoulders before pulling me close against his chest. We stand together in comfortable silence, watching the evening stars begin to emerge above the valley.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Diego whispers, kissing the top of my head.
I lean back against him, smiling into the warm evening breeze. "I was just thinking about how strange life is, Diego. How a moment of absolute cruelty and malice—something meant to break us—turned out to be the exact key that set us free."
Diego tightens his arms around me, resting his chin on my shoulder. "My mother tried to build her entire world on a foundation of lies and division," he murmurs softly. "But love, truth, and real family always find a way to break through the dark. We won, Mariana. Together."

I turn around in his arms, wrapping my arms around his neck, looking up into the eyes of the man who stood by my side through the darkest storm of our lives.
"Yes, we did," I whisper, smiling as I kiss him. "And our happily ever after has only just begun."
