Chapter 1 - The Shattered Illusion

By the time I saw my mother-in-law smile over my glass, my daughter’s seventh birthday party had already turned into something cold and dangerous.
The backyard was full of pink balloons, cupcake towers, laughing children, and parents pretending not to notice the tension between me and my husband’s family.
I was standing near the patio table when Eleanor leaned over my lemonade with her back half-turned to the guests.
A tiny packet disappeared between her fingers. White powder fell into my drink, sinking fast beneath the ice.
For one second, I could not breathe. Then I saw her smile.
She looked at me like she was waiting for the show to begin.
My sister-in-law, Paige, rushed over, flushed and irritated. “Is that mine?” she snapped, grabbing the glass before I could stop her.
“Paige, don’t—” I said.
But she tilted it back and drank every drop.
Eleanor’s face changed so quickly that the smile looked torn off. Paige laughed once, then pressed a hand to her stomach.
“What did you put in that?” I whispered.
Eleanor grabbed Paige’s arm, hissing, “You stupid girl.”
That was when my husband, Mark, stepped onto the patio and saw his sister swaying. Guests turned. Children went quiet.
Paige’s knees buckled beside the birthday table, knocking over a tray of cookies. My daughter screamed from near the bounce house.
I shouted for someone to call 911, then snatched Eleanor’s purse from the chair before she could reach it.
Inside was another packet, a folded note, and my name written across a printed hospital intake form.
The note said: Make her look drunk. Get custody conversation started tonight.
Mark read it over my shoulder. His face went gray.
Eleanor kept saying Paige was just overheated, but Paige, trembling on the ground, whispered, “Mom told me Sarah had to be removed.”
The ambulance arrived under the string lights while my daughter cried into my dress.
When the paramedic asked what Paige had taken, I held up the packet from Eleanor’s purse.

Eleanor stopped pretending then. She looked at me with pure hatred and said, “You were ruining this family.”
And in front of every guest at my daughter’s birthday party, the nightmare they had planned for me finally became visible.
