Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

The legal pressure mounted with terrifying speed. Within seventy-two hours of the incident at the birthday party, Jonathan Vance had filed comprehensive court motions covering divorce, child custody, asset division, and commercial restraining orders.
Mark realized he couldn't fight back. Without an office, without capital, with his parents’ accounts frozen, and with Jonathan holding ironclad pre-nuptial and post-nuptial asset disclosures signed by Mark himself years ago during a routine business loan application, Mark was completely defenseless.
On Wednesday afternoon, Mark sat at a neutral conference room table in downtown Columbus. Across from him sat Jonathan Vance, flanked by two paralegals.
The door opened, and I walked in.
I wore a tailored navy blue pantsuit, a crisp white silk blouse, and minimalist diamond earrings. My posture was straight, my expression composed and serene. I looked every bit the powerful corporate executive and heiress I actually was.
Mark looked up, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. He looked small, collapsed inward by the sudden collapse of his entire reality.
“Victoria,” Mark whispered, standing up halfway before sitting back down under Jonathan’s icy glare. “Please. Let’s talk. Just you and me. We have two daughters. You can't just tear this family apart over… over a mistake.”
I pulled out my chair, sat down gracefully, and placed my leather portfolio on the table.
“You called it a mistake, Mark,” I said evenly. “I call it character revelation. Diane spent twelve years teaching my daughters that they were inferior because of their gender. And you spent twelve years endorsing that poison, treating me like a servant in my own financial empire.”
“I didn't know!” Mark pleaded, his voice breaking. “You never told me how wealthy you were!”
“Why should I have?” I countered, raising an eyebrow. “If I had told you, you and your mother would have spent the last decade trying to siphon my family’s estate into your failing logistics ventures. You loved the illusion of being the provider, Mark. You loved looking down on me. Well, the illusion is over.”
Jonathan slid a thick document across the mahogany table toward Mark.
“Read it and sign it, Mr. Mercer,” Jonathan said smoothly. “It is the final settlement agreement.”
Mark looked down at the papers. His hands shook as he flipped through the pages.
Full custody of Emma and Lily granted to Victoria Mercer.
Sole ownership of the suburban residence transferred entirely to Victoria.
Complete forfeiture of any claim to V.A. Holdings, Mercer Logistics assets, or Victoria’s personal trust.
A strict no-contact order prohibiting Diane Mercer from coming within five hundred feet of Emma or Lily permanently.
“No contact with my mother?” Mark choked out, looking up in horror. “Victoria, you can't keep my mother away from her granddaughters!”
“Watch me,” I said quietly. “Diane crossed a line that can never be uncrossed. She laid her hands on my child. And you agreed with her. That means neither of you has any place in my daughters' lives ever again.”

Mark looked at the pen resting beside the document. He looked at me, seeing for the first time the formidable woman beneath the quiet surface he had taken for granted for over a decade.
With a heavy, defeated sigh, Mark picked up the pen and signed his name on the dotted line.
