Chapter 3 - The Counter-Strike

The legal counter-offensive began on December 26, the day after Christmas.
While Andrew was busy entertaining Vanessa and hosting a brunch for his business associates to prove how “unfazed” he was by my departure, a pair of local county marshals drove up the long driveway of the Providence house. They weren't there to serve a standard divorce petition. They were carrying an emergency eviction notice and an injunction for property preservation issued directly through the trust court.
According to later accounts from our next-door neighbor, Mrs. Gable, Andrew had answered the door in a cashmere sweater with a mimosa in hand, laughing as he assumed it was a holiday delivery.
When the marshal handed him the multi-page legal packet, Andrew’s face reportedly turned the color of chalk.
My phone buzzed furiously at eleven o'clock that morning. It wasn't a text; it was a direct phone call. I let it ring out. He called again. And again. By the fourth time, I slid the green button and pressed the phone to my ear.
“Hannah!” Andrew’s voice was a ragged mix of disbelief and furious panic. “What is the meaning of this? There are marshals at my front door telling me I have two hours to vacate the premises! Are you insane? Do you know who my clients are?”
“You told me you made your choice, Andrew,” I said, keeping my voice remarkably calm. I was sitting at my father’s kitchen island, watching Lily color with green and red crayons. “You said Vanessa was staying for Christmas. Well, it turns out you’re both going to need a hotel room.”
“It’s my house!” he screamed, his professional composure completely shattering. “I paid the mortgage! I bought the stainless steel appliances! I put down the deposit!”
“You bought the house,” I corrected him softly, echoing my father’s words. “You never owned the land. And as of yesterday, the land trust has exercised its default clause due to unauthorized, disruptive occupants. You breached the terms. You’re trespassing.”
“This is a trick,” he gasped, breathing heavily. “Your father did this. That old man is manipulating you. Listen to me, Hannah, bring Lily back right now, drop this legal nonsense, and I won’t contest custody. We can handle this quietly.”
“Custody?” I repeated, a cold anger finally rising in my chest. “You watched your daughter get stuffed into trash bags and carried out into a blizzard while you stood inside with your mistress. You don't get to talk about custody, Andrew. You don't get to talk about family ever again. Talk to my father’s legal team. They’ll handle all your future correspondence.”
I hung up the phone and blocked his number.
An hour later, Margaret called from an unknown number. I didn't answer that one either, letting it go straight to voicemail. Calvin listened to the recording later that evening: Margaret’s voice was trembling with outraged aristocracy, demanding to know how we could humiliate her son in front of his elite colleagues. She threatened lawsuits, police intervention, and social ruin.
My father simply saved the audio file into a folder labeled Exhibit B.
That afternoon, Calvin took me to the local family court to file our formal petitions: emergency sole custody of Lily based on child endangerment, a protection order prohibiting Andrew from coming within five hundred feet of us, and a financial freeze on all corporate assets connected to his business accounts, which my father’s forensic accountants discovered had been heavily leveraged to fund Vanessa’s lifestyle.
As we walked out of the courthouse into the crisp winter air, flashing cameras from local media outlets suddenly caught us by surprise. Word had leaked about the prominent estate lawyer’s daughter filing a high-profile asset freeze against her tech-executive husband.
A reporter thrust a microphone toward me. “Mrs. Collins! Is it true you abandoned your husband because of financial irreconcilability?”
May you like
I stopped, looked directly into the camera lens, and thought of Lily shivering in her pink coat on Christmas Eve.
“I didn't abandon my home,” I said clearly, my voice carrying across the pavement. “I protected my child from a man who chose his mistress over her safety in the middle of a blizzard. The truth will come out very soon.”
