Chapter 4 - The Exposure

Victoria went completely still. The color drained from her face, leaving her skin looking like powdered chalk. For a brief second, the mask slipped, revealing the panicked calculation of a woman whose carefully guarded secrets had just been breached.

“What... what are you talking about?” she stammered, though her voice lacked its usual commanding authority.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about,” I stepped closer, lowering my voice so it was barely a whisper, but every word carried the weight of an anvil. “You thought you could humiliate me, use Emma’s social security number to open a fake ledger, and treat my family like dirt while smiling for the local gazette. Well, games over, Victoria.”

Before she could recover her composure, the front door swung open and Daniel walked in. He stopped dead in his tracks, taking in the electric tension hanging in the air between his mother and me.

“Mom? Lily? What’s going on?” Daniel asked, looking frantically back and forth between us.

“Your wife,” Victoria spat, recovering her venom with impressive speed, “has lost her mind. She is ungrateful, paranoid, and completely unstable. After all the sacrifices I’ve made, she stands there accusing me of... of nonsense!”

“Nonsense?” I turned my gaze to Daniel, locking eyes with my husband. “Tell him, Victoria. Tell him about the account. Tell him how you used our daughter’s identity to play a cruel psychological game.”

Daniel turned pale. He looked at his mother, his voice cracking. “Mom... did you? Did you really use Emma’s SSN for that fake account?”

Victoria’s expression hardened into pure ice. She looked at her son with profound disappointment. “You told her? You pathetic, spineless boy. I gave you everything, and you fold the second your little schoolteacher wife throws a tantrum?”

“It’s not a tantrum, Daniel!” I snapped. “Look at her! She doesn’t respect you, she doesn’t respect me, and she certainly doesn’t love our daughter. She loves control.”

Victoria grabbed her designer handbag off the couch, her eyes flashing with a dangerous fury. “You will regret this, Lily. Both of you. You think you can talk to me like this? By Monday, every trust, every safety net, every cent of family backing you rely on will be permanently cut off. You’ll be begging in the streets.”

“We don’t need your money, Victoria,” I said calmly, pointing firmly toward the front door. “And now, you need to leave.”

She glared at me with pure hatred, spun around on her high heels, and slammed the door so hard the framed photos on the wall rattled.

Silence descended on the house. Daniel slumped against the wall, burying his face in his hands.

“We’re ruined,” he groaned. “She’s going to cut us off completely. My trust fund, the investment properties—everything.”

I walked over to him, pulled his hands away from his face, and looked straight into his eyes. “Good. Because the moment you stop letting your mother buy your soul, we can finally start living our own life.”
