Chapter 9 - The Bright Lights of New York

Stepping off the plane at JFK Airport felt like stepping into a movie. A sleek black town car was waiting for us on the tarmac, holding a digital placard that read: WELCOME, EMMA VANCE – AETHER & THREAD DESIGNER PRODIGY.

The driver loaded our luggage while Chloe, our PR liaison, greeted us with enthusiastic hugs and warm coffee. "Welcome to New York! The city is already buzzing about the showcase tonight. Julian is thrilled to meet you!"

The hotel was magnificent—a towering glass building overlooking Central Park, with sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline glittering against the evening sky. Emma stood by the floor-to-ceiling hotel room window, her breath fogging the glass slightly as she stared down at the yellow cabs and endless streams of glowing headlights.

"Mom," she whispered, turning around with shining eyes. "We're really here."

"We're really here, sweetheart," I said, walking over to wrap my arms around her.

That evening, the VIP Designer Gala at Aether & Thread’s Manhattan headquarters was nothing short of breathtaking. The venue was a massive, industrial-chic loft filled with glittering chandeliers, minimalist white decor, and hundred of well-dressed fashion editors, critics, and executives sipping champagne.

As we walked down the grand white staircase into the main hall, all eyes turned toward us. Cameras flashed from the press pit. Chloe escorted us directly to the center gallery, where a pristine glass display case stood under bright spotlights.

Inside the case sat Emma’s masterpiece: the patchwork jacket crafted from Barbara's discarded castoffs. A sleek brass plaque beneath the glass read: “REBORN WINTER” – Designed by Emma Vance (Age 10). Created from repurposed materials, symbolizing resilience, vision, and the triumph of creativity over cynicism.

Julian Vance himself walked over, stepping out from the crowd of executives. He wore a sharp charcoal suit and a warm, welcoming smile as he extended his hand.

"Emma Vance," Julian said, shaking her small hand firmly. "It is an absolute honor to meet the youngest visionary in our brand's history. Your piece has captured the imagination of the entire fashion world."

"Thank you, Mr. Vance," Emma replied with absolute poise, her voice carrying clearly across the quieted room. "I had some very... unique raw materials to work with."

Julian threw his head back and laughed heartily. "Indeed you did! And let me tell you, the internet loves a monarch who turns trash into treasure. We've already received partnership inquiries from three major sustainable fashion houses."

As the cameras flashed and applause rippled through the room, I looked over at David. He caught my eye, smiled brightly, and pulled me close against his side. Across the room, I knew Barbara was sitting alone in her grand, silent mansion, staring at her phone screen, realizing that all her money and social posturing couldn't stop true talent from shining.
