Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Inheritance

The email came from a man named Julian Vance, a senior partner at Vance & Sterling Law Firm—the exact legal counsel that had historically represented the Reynolds family. My first instinct was to delete it, to block the address, and to pretend the corporate world of my ex-husband had completely swallowed itself whole. But my eyes caught the second line of the preview text: This concerns a fiduciary codicil left by the late Arthur Reynolds that supersedes all current litigation.

Curiosity, mixed with a protective maternal instinct, forced me to open it. Julian Vance requested a private, confidential meeting at his office the following morning, emphasizing that it was of paramount importance to Ethan's future.

I didn't tell Michael. I didn't even tell my parents, not wanting to worry them needlessly. Instead, I arranged for my mother to pick Ethan up from school and took a long lunch break, heading down to the sleek, mahogany-paneled offices on the ground floor of the Chicago Board of Trade building.

Julian Vance was an older man with silver hair, sharp gray eyes, and an expression that suggested he had seen every dark family secret Chicago’s elite had ever tried to bury.

“Thank you for coming, Mrs. Parker,” Julian said, gesturing to a leather armchair opposite his massive oak desk. He slid a thick, dark-blue binder across the polished wood. “I’ll get straight to the point. You are undoubtedly aware of the ongoing legal war between Mrs. Patricia Reynolds and the late Arthur Reynolds’s brothers regarding the estate.”

“I’ve heard snippets through the grapevine,” I replied coldly, keeping my hands resting firmly on my lap. “It has nothing to do with me or my son.”

“That is where you are mistaken,” Julian said, opening the binder to reveal a yellowed, handwritten document alongside crisp, modern legal addendums. “Arthur Reynolds was a stern man, Mrs. Parker, but he was not a fool. Long before his death, he suspected Patricia’s infidelities. He lacked conclusive scientific proof at the time, but he instituted a very specific, watertight contingency plan into his private trust.”

He turned the page to reveal a clause highlighted in bright yellow.

“Arthur knew that if Patricia ever attempted to claim full control of the primary estate, or if a scandal regarding lineage ever broke out, the true bloodline needed to be protected at all costs. According to this certified codicil, any child biologically descended from Michael—regardless of Michael's own actual paternity—who bears the direct patrilineal markers verified by modern DNA profiling, becomes the sole primary beneficiary of the multi-million-dollar Arthur Reynolds Legacy Trust upon reaching majority age, with a substantial educational and living stipend made available immediately.”

I stared at the lawyer, my breath catching in my throat. “Are you saying... Ethan?”

“Yes,” Julian nodded gravely. “Ethan is the only living great-grandchild in the direct line of descent recognized under Arthur’s private amendment. Because Michael’s legal birth certificate names him as Arthur’s son, and genetic testing has now verified Ethan as Michael’s biological son, the trust recognizes Ethan as the legitimate heir. Patricia’s entire lawsuit against the estate has just been legally nullified by this single document, because the estate bypasses her and Michael entirely and vests directly in your son.”

The irony was so thick I could almost taste it. Patricia had spent five years treating Ethan like trash, trying to humiliate him, calling him a bastard, and attempting to strip him of his dignity—all to protect a legacy she thought belonged to her preferred bloodline. In the end, her own malice had triggered the exact clause that stripped her of everything, transferring the entire Reynolds empire directly into the hands of the little boy she had tried to destroy.

“There is a catch, of course,” Julian continued, folding his hands. “Patricia is desperate. She knows about this codicil now. Her lawyers have filed an emergency motion to contest its authenticity, claiming undue influence and demanding a court-ordered psychological evaluation of you and your fitness as a mother, hoping to strip you of custody so she can control the trust as Ethan’s legal guardian.”

My blood boiled. The monster wasn't dead yet; she was just cornered, and a cornered animal was more dangerous than ever.

“She wants a fight?” I whispered, a cold, hard resolve settling deep into my bones. “Then I’ll give her a war.”
