Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Empress

"Mrs. Vance," Judge Harrison said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a terrifying authority that silenced the entire room. "Do you have anything to say before I hold you in contempt of court, revoke your guardianship petition, and issue an immediate bench warrant for perjury and extortion?"
Eleanor looked utterly smaller in her chair, the immaculate Chanel suit suddenly looking like a costume worn by a trapped animal. Her mouth opened and closed soundlessly, her eyes darting toward Sterling, but her lawyer had physically distanced himself, leaning back with his arms crossed, effectively cutting all professional ties in real-time.
"It... it was all for the family," Eleanor stammered, her voice cracking, the polished matriarch completely disintegrated. "Clara isn't fit... she’s young, she’s unstable... I was only trying to protect my grandchildren's future!"
"Your grandchildren were terrorized, ripped from their home in the middle of a rainstorm, and traumatized based on manufactured lies to satisfy your pathological need for control," Judge Harrison thundered, slamming his gavel down with a force that made the inkwells jump.
"Here is my ruling," the judge declared, standing up.
The emergency custody order is vacated immediately, with prejudice. Full physical and legal custody is restored to Mrs. Clara Vance, effective immediately.
All previous visitation rights, grandparent privileges, and access orders granted to Eleanor Vance are permanently revoked. She is hereby barred from approaching within one thousand feet of Mrs. Vance, her children, their school, or their residence under any circumstances.
The court finds probable cause for perjury, subornation of perjury, and filing false police reports. Bailiff, take Eleanor Vance into custody."
Before Eleanor could even draw a breath to scream, two bailiffs stepped up behind her, grabbed her arms by the wrists, and clicked cold steel handcuffs around her manicured wrists.
"No! You can't do this! Do you know who I am? I am an elite member of this city!" Eleanor shrieked, thrashing against the officers as she was hauled backward down the aisle, her expensive designer handbag dropping forgotten to the floor.
I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I simply watched as the woman who had tried to destroy my life was led out through the heavy wooden doors in handcuffs.
"Court is adjourned," Judge Harrison said briskly, turning and walking back into his chambers.

Marcus exhaled a long, shaky breath, slumping back into his seat and pulling me into a fierce, emotional hug. "It’s over, Clara. She’s gone."
"Not yet," I whispered, pulling away and grabbing my coat. "My boys are still at her estate with her hired housekeeper. We have to go get them right now."
