Chapter 5 - The Legal Reckoning

The divorce proceedings were swift, ruthless, and absolute.

Because of the extensive pre-marital asset documentation maintained by the Arthur Vance Estate, Mark’s legal team had zero grounds to claim any share of my inheritance, the residential property, or the commercial real estate portfolio.

During the court hearing in late autumn, Judge Sarah Jenkins presided over the final settlement.

Diane Mercer sat in the back row of the gallery, dressed in a faded black dress, looking ten years older than she had two months prior. Her husband Richard sat beside her, staring blankly at his hands. His transport company had filed for Chapter 11 reorganization three weeks earlier after the bank pulled their credit line.

Mark sat at the defense table next to his court-appointed attorney. His high-end legal counsel had withdrawn from the case after Mark failed to pay their retainer fee.

Judge Jenkins reviewed the financial disclosures and the guardian ad litem report regarding the children.

"Mr. Mercer," Judge Jenkins said, her voice echoing in the marble courtroom. "I have reviewed the testimony and the evidence provided. The court finds that Mrs. Vance has acted with complete financial propriety regarding her separate property. Furthermore, the report from the child psychologist indicates that your daughters, Emma and Lily, experienced significant emotional distress due to the ongoing hostility exhibited by your mother, which you actively supported."

Mark kept his head bowed. "I understand, Your Honor."

"The court hereby grants sole legal and physical custody of Emma Vance and Lily Vance to Victoria Vance," Judge Jenkins announced, striking her gavel. "Mr. Mercer will be granted supervised visitation every second weekend, subject to completion of a court-approved parental sensitivity course. Child support will be calculated based on Mr. Mercer's imputed earning capacity."

When the judge adjourned the court, I gathered my files and turned to leave.

Diane stood up from the gallery bench, stepping into the aisle to block my path. Her face was gaunt, her makeup uneven.

"You took everything from us," Diane whispered, her voice shaking with venomous grief. "My son's business. Our family reputation. Our home. You destroyed the Mercer family."

I stopped and looked at her.

"No, Diane," I said softly, so that only she could hear. "You traded your family's future for a foolish pride in a name that had no substance. You wanted a grandson so badly that you threw away two incredible granddaughters who would have loved you forever. You destroyed your family. I just cleared away the rubble."

Diane opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She looked at Richard, who gently took her elbow and pulled her away, his eyes filled with total surrender.
