Chapter 7 - Springtime and New Beginnings

By the time spring returned to the Hudson River valley, the Cole estate had undergone a profound transformation, both inside and out.

The sprawling gardens were bursting with blooming tulips and cherry blossoms. The grand mansion no longer felt like a cold museum of power and wealth; it was alive with laughter, music, and the warm hum of a real home.

Maria had officially graduated from her internship and transitioned into a full-time financial analyst role at Cole Enterprises. Her sharp analytical mind and relentless work ethic quickly earned the respect of the entire executive board, including Robert Sterling, who frequently praised her contributions during corporate briefings.

My mother had returned from Palm Beach, not to take back her old position or rule the household with an iron fist, but to live in a quiet, independent cottage on the edge of the estate grounds. She had mellowed remarkably, spending her afternoons volunteering at local literacy programs and occasionally joining Lily in the east-wing playroom to paint clumsy watercolors.

One warm Saturday afternoon, Maria and I sat beneath the old oak tree where our story had truly begun.

Lily was a few yards away, chasing a golden retriever we had recently rescued from a local shelter, her laughter carrying across the manicured lawn.

"Do you remember what you said to me the first day we met?" I asked quietly, looking over at Maria.

She smiled, leaning back against the rough bark of the oak trunk. "You told me you were pretending to sleep so the world would stop asking you for things."

"And you gave me the one thing I didn't know I needed," I said, reaching out to take her hand. Her fingers intertwined naturally with mine. "Peace. Purpose. Family."

Maria turned her head, her dark eyes shining with warmth and affection. "You gave us a chance when the whole world was ready to throw us away, Ethan. You changed everything for us."

"We changed it together," I replied softly.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small velvet box—not containing an ancient, cursed family emerald, but a simple, elegant diamond ring designed to catch the afternoon sunlight.

Maria’s breath caught in her throat. She looked from the ring up into my eyes, her smile radiant and absolute.

"Ethan..." she whispered.

"Will you marry me, Maria?" I asked, my heart beating with a clarity and certainty I had never felt before in my life. "Will you and Lily make this house a real home, forever?"

Before Maria could answer, a small pair of arms wrapped tightly around both of our legs from behind.

"Say yes, Mommy!" Lily cheered, jumping up and down in the grass. "Efan is the best tower in the whole world!"

Maria laughed, a rich, beautiful sound that echoed up into the branches of the ancient oak tree.

May you like

She leaned forward and kissed my cheek, her hand resting over my heart right where Lily’s tiny hand had landed all those months ago.

"Yes," Maria whispered against my lips. "A thousand times, yes."
