Chapter 10 - The Promise of Tomorrow

Three years later.

The sun was setting over the Oregon valley, painting the sky in brilliant shades of pink, orange, and gold. Our backyard was filled with the sound of laughter, music, and the clinking of glasses.

It was Mia’s ninth birthday.

The yard was decorated with fairy lights and paper lanterns. A group of her school friends were running around, playing a chaotic game of tag with Barnaby, who was barking happily, his tail wagging like a metronome.

I stood on the porch, holding a tray of cupcakes. A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped around my waist from behind, and a chin rested gently on my shoulder.

“You did an amazing job with the decorations, Harper,” Thomas whispered, kissing my cheek.

“I had a lot of help,” I smiled, leaning back against his chest.

In the three years since we had met, Thomas had become our rock. He was the man who held me when the occasional nightmare still woke me up, the man who helped Mia build her elaborate treehouse in the backyard, and the man who had shown both of us what unconditional, safe love truly felt like.

Mia ran up to the porch, her cheeks flushed with excitement, her long hair flying behind her. She looked healthy, happy, and vibrant—a complete contrast to the terrified, shivering little girl I had found behind the snack shack three years ago.

“Mama! Thomas! Come play! We’re going to open the presents now!” she called out.

“We’re right behind you, birthday girl,” Thomas laughed, letting go of my waist to help me carry the tray down the steps.

Before I followed him, I stopped for a moment, looking up at the beautiful, clear evening sky. The memory of that dark, stormy night on the beach in California felt like a lifetime ago. The pain, the betrayal, and the fear had been washed away, replaced by the deep, fertile soil of our new life.

I looked down at the silver locket around my neck. Inside was a picture of Mia and me, taken on our first day in Oregon.

We had survived. We had fought through the darkness, and we had found our way to the light.

With a deep, peaceful breath, I stepped down the porch stairs and joined my family in the garden, ready for whatever beautiful tomorrow awaited us.
