Part 2: The Secret Hidden in Her File

At 1:37 a.m., Marcus stared at the screen in disbelief.
Lily Parker's personnel file was only six pages long.
But one document attached near the bottom made his chest tighten.
Medical Leave Request — Denied.
Three times.
The first request was submitted eleven months ago.
The second, seven months ago.
The third, only six weeks earlier.
Each request included a doctor's recommendation.
Each request had been rejected.
Marcus opened the attached medical report.
His stomach dropped.
Lily was suffering from a serious gastrointestinal condition that required surgery. Without treatment, her condition would continue worsening.
The doctor had written:
"Patient is at risk of internal bleeding and severe complications if surgery is delayed."
Marcus leaned back slowly.
She wasn't working because she wanted to.
She was working because she believed she had no choice.
And according to the payroll records, she had exhausted every available sick day.
The next morning, Marcus arrived at the office before sunrise.
By eight o'clock he was sitting across from Human Resources.
"Why was this denied?" he asked.
The HR manager shifted uncomfortably.
"The previous operations director determined the department couldn't spare additional staff."
Marcus stared at her.
"A woman was denied medical leave because replacing a janitor was inconvenient?"
The room fell silent.
By noon, Marcus had approved emergency medical leave personally.
But when he called Lily into his office, things did not go the way he expected.
She sat across from him looking exhausted but proud.
"I can't accept charity," she said immediately.
"It's not charity."
"It feels like it."
Marcus slid the medical reports toward her.
"You need surgery."
"I need rent."
"You need to stay alive for Sophie."
The words hit harder than he intended.
For a moment Lily looked away.
Then tears filled her eyes.
"Do you know what it's like?" she whispered. "To choose between medicine and groceries?"
Marcus did know.
More than she realized.
"My mother made that choice," he said quietly.
Lily looked up.
"Every week," Marcus continued. "Until one day she couldn't anymore."
For the first time, something changed between them.
Not trust.
Not yet.
Understanding.
A few seconds later she lowered her head and began to cry.
And after fighting alone for years, she finally said the words she had never allowed herself to say.
"I’m scared."
Marcus nodded.
"I know."
Two weeks later, Lily underwent surgery.
And while she was in the hospital, Sophie gained an unexpected visitor.
Marcus.
Every afternoon.
He brought books.
Coloring pages.
Stuffed animals.
And once, a ridiculously large teddy bear that barely fit through the door.
Sophie laughed so hard she nearly fell off the bed.
It was the first time Marcus had heard that sound in years.
He didn't realize how much he needed it.
Until one afternoon, Sophie asked a question that left him speechless.
"Did your mommy love you a lot?"
Marcus swallowed.
"Very much."
Sophie smiled.
May you like
"My mommy would have liked her."
For the first time in a long time, Marcus had to look away.
