Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

By Sunday afternoon, the atmosphere inside the county police department felt like a compressed spring.

Officer Miller and Detective Davis sat at a cluttered metal desk under the harsh glow of overhead fluorescent lights, reviewing digital copies of the files recovered from the hidden floor compartment. Every document was a brick in a fortress of evidence: falsified tax assessments, covert emails between Arthur Sterling and corrupt municipal zoning board members, and bank records showing secret payoffs to local contractors to illegally disconnect utility lines to properties targeted for eminent domain seizure.

"It's an airtight white-collar indictment," Davis said, rubbing his tired eyes. "The state attorney general's office has already reviewed the preliminary PDF files we sent over an hour ago. They're drawing up the arrest warrant for Arthur Sterling as we speak. Fraud, extortion, and criminal coercion resulting in bodily harm."

Miller didn't smile. He was staring at a photograph recovered from one of Clara's storage bins—a faded polaroid of Clara at age ten, smiling brightly in a sunlit garden, standing right beside a younger, gentler-looking Arthur Sterling.

"Power rots people from the inside out," Miller murmured, tossing the photograph onto the desk. "He forgot how to be a father the second his bank account got bigger than his conscience."

Suddenly, the squad room door swung open, and Officer Jenkins rushed in, holding a clipboard with an urgent look on his face.

"Miller! You got a call from St. Jude's. Dr. Vance says you need to get over there right now."

Miller's heart hammered against his ribs. "Is it the babies? Did something happen to Lily?"

"No," Jenkins said quickly. "The babies are stable and improving. But Julian Vance—the lawyer—just showed up at the hospital with a court order signed by Judge Henderson. They're trying to discharge Lily into Arthur Sterling's immediate custody using an emergency ex-parte guardianship petition."

Miller slammed his hand down on the metal desk, rattling a stack of case files. "Ex-parte? Judge Henderson signed that without a hearing?"

"Henderson is in Arthur's pocket everyone in the county knows it," Davis cursed, leaping out of his chair and grabbing his service belt. "If they get Lily out of that hospital, Arthur will hide her away in some private estate overseas, and we'll never see her again."

"Not on my watch," Miller growled, grabbing his jacket off the back of his chair. "Let's ride."
