Part 3: The Family Starts Falling Apart

By Christmas morning, everyone knew.

Not because I told them.

Because legal notices have a way of becoming family gossip.

Stephanie called twenty-three times.

I ignored every call.

Then Tyler showed up at my front door.

"I didn't know," he said immediately.

"I swear."

He looked exhausted.

"They've been lying to all of us."

I believed him.

He had married into the family years after Dad died.

He had never questioned the story he'd been told.

Behind him stood his children—Owen, Ella, and Ruby.

Each held a wrapped Christmas gift.

Ella stepped forward shyly.

"Are these for Chloe?"

I nodded.

She looked down.

"We didn't know Grandma told her not to come."

"We thought she didn't want us."

Before I could answer, Chloe walked into the hallway.

The cousins froze.

Ella burst into tears.

"I'm sorry."

Chloe looked confused.

"You didn't do it."

"No..."

Ella sniffled.

"But we laughed sometimes when Grandma ignored you."

For a long second nobody spoke.

Then Chloe quietly handed each cousin one of the presents she'd made.

"I still wanted you to have these."

The adults started crying before the children did.

Because kindness has a way of exposing guilt.
