Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

Five years later, the autumn air was crisp and sweet as we gathered in the backyard for a celebration.
The old house had been repainted a cheerful soft blue, and the garden was a lush paradise of flowers and vegetables. The birdhouse David and Lily had built years ago was now home to generations of sparrows.
Today was a double celebration: Lily’s fourteenth birthday and my wedding to David.
There were no grand, ostentatious ballrooms, no country club memberships, and no toxic relatives demanding perfection. Instead, our wedding was intimate, held right on our lawn under a canopy of fairy lights and surrounded by the people who truly loved us—our close friends, David’s wonderful children, and a community of neighbors who had become our chosen family.
Lily stood beside me as my maid of honor, wearing a gorgeous yellow sundress that caught the evening light. She was tall, confident, and radiant, her laughter ringing out across the yard as David’s eldest son tripped over his speech notes.
When it was time for my toast, I stood up and looked around the circle of smiling faces.
"People often talk about family as something you're born into," I began, my voice clear and steady. "They tell you that blood binds you, no matter how toxic, no matter how cruel, no matter how heavy the burden. But I've learned that true family isn't about shared DNA or social status. True family is about safety. It’s about someone holding your hand when you're scared, protecting you in the dark, and making sure you never, ever feel alone."
I looked down at Lily, who beamed back at me with tears in her eyes, and then at David, who smiled with a warmth that reached his soul.
"We survived the hottest rooms and the coldest hearts," I continued, raising my glass. "And today, we celebrate a life built on truth, healing, and unconditional love. To new beginnings, and to happily ever after."

"To happily ever after!" everyone cheered, glasses clinking in the twilight.
As the music started and the lights twinkled overhead, I pulled Lily into a dance. The night was cool, the air was sweet, and for the first time in my life, everything was exactly where it was supposed to be.
