Chapter 5 - The Corporate Takeover

While the sheriff’s deputies supervised Richard and Elaine hastily throwing their clothes into cheap plastic garbage bags on the front lawn, I drove our car up the driveway, parking right behind Richard’s luxury Mercedes.
Noah and Lily unbuckled and stepped out onto the lawn. For the first time in three days, my children stood tall, breathing in the air of their own home without fear.
Richard staggered down the steps, dragging a bulging suitcase behind him. His silk bathrobe was stained with coffee, and his hair was wildly disheveled. He looked at me, not with the condescending superiority he had worn yesterday, but with a desperate, trembling panic.
“Julia,” Richard choked out, his voice cracking. “Julia, listen to me. We’re family. You can’t do this to us. Where are we supposed to go? We’re elderly!”
I stepped out of the car, looking down at my father-in-law. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to.
“When you locked my children out in the rain yesterday,” I said quietly, “when you struck my son across the face for grieving his father, and when your wife stripped my wedding ring off my hand... you stopped being family. You became trespassers.”
Elaine rushed down the steps behind him, her face red with rage, pointing a shaking finger at me.
“You gold-digging bitch!” Elaine screamed, lunging forward before one of the security guards stepped cleanly into her path, blocking her. “Mark worked for us! That company belongs to Richard! You manipulated our dying son on his deathbed to steal everything we built!”
“Mark gave me this folder two months before he died because he knew exactly who you were,” I replied steadily, holding up the brown leather portfolio. “He spent years watching you belittle him, drain his accounts, and treat his wife and children like second-class citizens while you lived off his hard work. He built an empire to make sure you could never hurt us again.”
My phone buzzed in my hand. It was an alert from Rebecca’s team at the corporate office downtown.
I glanced down at the screen, then looked back up at Richard.

“By the way, Richard,” I said smoothly. “Your corporate board members just held an emergency vote at 9:00 AM. Since Aegis Holdings owns the controlling fifty-one percent of the voting shares, your position as CEO of Whitman Manufacturing has been terminated with cause. You are locked out of the building, your corporate credit cards have been frozen, and forensic accountants are currently auditing your expense accounts for embezzlement over the last ten years.”
Richard clutched his chest, stumbling backward against the fender of his Mercedes as the sheer magnitude of his ruin crashed down upon him.
