Chapter 5 - The Legal Strike and the Family Fallout

The testing facility was quiet, sterile, and smelled faintly of rubbing alcohol and bleached floors. It was the morning of December 27th, two days after Christmas, but the holiday spirit felt like a distant, distorted memory.
Samuel, Fiona, and I sat in a row of hard plastic chairs in the waiting room. Fiona was coloring in a small notebook she had brought along, seemingly recovered from the emotional shock of Christmas night, though she still stuck close to my side. Samuel sat on my other side, holding my hand with a grip that communicated a silent, unwavering solidarity. He had spent the last 48 hours proving his dedication—blocking his parents’ numbers, ignoring a barrage of furious voicemails from Janice, and helping Fiona build an elaborate Lego castle to restore her sense of safety and happiness.
“Fiona Smith?” a nurse called out, holding a clipboard.
“That’s us,” I said gently.
We stood up and walked into a small, bright examination room. The process was quick—a simple, painless cheek swab for Samuel and Fiona. Within ten minutes, it was over. We paid for the expedited rush service, guaranteeing the results would be delivered via secure email within forty-eight hours.
Those two days passed in a blur of quiet domesticity. We stayed home, baked cookies, watched movies, and turned our backs on the rest of the world. Samuel didn't answer a single call from his sister Kimberly or his father Gerald.
On the morning of December 29th, the notification dropped into our shared inbox: Laboratory Results Ready for Secure Download.
Samuel, Fiona, and I were sitting at the kitchen island eating breakfast when the email arrived. Samuel’s phone flashed on the counter. He looked at me, his heart clearly pounding against his ribs, even though we both knew the inevitable outcome.
“Open it,” I instructed calmly.
Samuel unlocked his phone, clicked the secure link, entered our credentials, and downloaded the PDF document. He scrolled past the medical jargon straight to the summary section at the bottom of the page.
He read the sentence out loud, his voice thick with emotion:
“Based on the genetic markers analyzed, the probability of paternity is 99.99%. Samuel Smith is the biological father of Fiona Smith.”
A massive sigh of relief escaped Samuel’s chest. He looked up at me, a watery smile breaking across his face, before looking down at Fiona, who was happily munching on a piece of toast.
“See?” I smiled, gently tapping the tip of Fiona’s nose. “Science confirms what we already knew. You are stuck with us forever.”
Fiona giggled, wiping a crumb from her mouth. “I knew that already, Mommy.”
“Now,” I said, looking across the kitchen counter at Samuel, “let’s get to work.”
We spent the next hour executing the second phase of our plan. We printed out multiple copies of the DNA lab report, highlighting the 99.99% probability section in bright yellow marker. We drafted a formal, legally binding cease-and-desist letter through an online legal service, terminating all communication, visitation, and association between Janice, Gerald, Kimberly, and our immediate family.
We placed the legal document and the highlighted DNA report inside a thick, heavy-duty manila envelope. Across the front, I wrote Janice and Gerald’s address in bold, clear handwriting.

Then, we drove down to the local post office and sent it via certified mail, requiring a signature upon delivery.
Little did we know, the shockwave of that envelope hitting their immaculate, perfectly curated doorstep was going to detonate faster and harder than we ever could have imagined.
