PART 9 A Brand New Empire

Six months later, spring had returned to the city, bringing with it vibrant blossoms of color, warm afternoon breezes, and a deep, unshakable peace that settled over our new lives.
The transition had been smoother than I ever could have imagined. After finalizing the divorce and locking down my separate corporate assets, I relocated Camila and myself into a breathtaking, light-filled modern penthouse overlooking the sprawling city park—purchased entirely under my independent holding company, with a secure private elevator and a doorman who knew us both by name.
My marketing consultancy firm, Silva & Associates, had just closed its most profitable quarter in history, landing a major international contract with a massive tech conglomerate in Silicon Valley. I had expanded my team, hired top-tier talent, and finally achieved the international recognition I had worked so tirelessly for.
And best of all? Camila was thriving.
She was enrolled in a wonderful, nurturing private preschool near our new home, where she danced ballet on Tuesdays, took swimming lessons on Thursdays, and spent her afternoons playing happily in the secure courtyard playground without a single shadow of fear or neglect hanging over her head.
As for Daniel and his family?
Through mutual acquaintances and brief legal follow-ups regarding minor post-divorce paperwork, I occasionally caught wind of their new reality. Carmen and Valeria were reportedly living in a cramped, rundown two-room apartment back in their hometown, arguing constantly and surviving on whatever meager odd jobs Valeria could pick up at a local retail store. Carmen’s health had declined due to a lack of funds for luxury private care, forcing her to rely on public health clinics—the very same system she used to sneer at.
Daniel, meanwhile, had been forced to take an entry-level customer service job at a local call center, working long, grueling shifts answering complaints from irate customers for minimum wage. The man who once sat at the center of a lavish seafood feast paid for by my sweat was now calculating how to split a cheap package of instant ramen noodles for dinner.
They had wanted discipline for my daughter. They had wanted her to learn what it meant to go without.
In the end, the universe gave them precisely what they asked for—and taught them the harshest lesson of their lives.
One Saturday afternoon, Camila and I were sitting on the plush rug of our sunlit living room, building a massive castle out of colorful wooden blocks. The air smelled of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies drifting from our modern kitchen, and soft acoustic music played gently in the background.
Camila carefully placed the final wooden block on top of the tallest tower, clapping her hands together with glee.
“Look, Mommy! Our castle is the biggest and strongest in the whole world!” she cheered, looking up at me with absolute adoration in her bright eyes.

I pulled her close, wrapping my arms around her warm, happy little body and resting my chin on her soft hair.
“It sure is, my love,” I murmured, smiling as I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the bright, limitless horizon of the city below. “And nobody will ever, ever knock it down.”
