Chapter 3 - The Crash at the Altar

The Grand Plaza Ballroom was blindingly bright. Crystal chandeliers hung low over tables covered in white orchids, silver dinnerware, and silk napkins. Over two hundred guests—investors, high-society figures, journalists, and corporate board members—were seated, waiting for the vows to begin.

At the front of the altar stood Connor. He wore a custom velvet tuxedo, his hair slicked back, looking every bit the triumphant billionaire he believed he was. Next to him stood Betsy, glowing with motherly pride in a shimmering gold gown. Beside Connor stood Alyssa, holding a bouquet of white roses, her hand resting conspicuously over her rounded stomach under a tight lace wedding dress.

The string quartet was mid-note, transitioning to the bridal march, when the heavy oak doors at the back of the hall slammed open.

The music faltered. Heads turned. A collective gasp rippled through the grand room as two hundred pairs of eyes shifted toward the entrance.

I walked down the center aisle.

My posture was straight, my head held high, my heels clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor. Brinley rested quietly against my chest, her tiny fingers clutching the lapel of my emerald suit.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Betsy screamed first, her voice cracking as she stepped forward, her face turning red. "Security! Get this crazy woman out of here!"

Two security guards stepped into the aisle, but Parker immediately blocked them, flashing his legal credentials and a court injunction. "Touch her, and you’re facing personal assault charges along with corporate interference," Parker said coldly. The guards froze.

Connor’s face turned from confusion to pure rage. He stepped down from the altar, marching toward me.

"Clara? Are you out of your mind?!" Connor spat in a low, furious whisper so the front row couldn't hear. "You think you can ruin my day? You think showing up with that child is going to change anything? Get out before I have you arrested!"

"I'm not here to ruin your day, Connor," I said, my voice cool, clear, and perfectly modulated. It echoed cleanly across the silent room. "I'm here to deliver a wedding gift."

Alyssa’s face paled beneath her makeup. She clutched her bouquet tighter. "Connor, make her leave! She’s trying to embarrass us!"

"Let her speak!" a loud voice called out from the second row. It was Marcus Sterling, the chairman of Vanguard Capital and one of the primary investors in Connor’s company. "Let’s hear what she has to say."

Connor panicked, his eyes darting toward Sterling. "Marcus, this is just my bitter ex-wife trying to create drama because she couldn't give me a—"

"Because I couldn't give you a son?" I interrupted, stepping closer. I unsealed the envelope and pulled out the medical records.

"You told the world—and your investors—that you were leaving me because I gave birth to a girl, and because Alyssa here was carrying your ultimate heir. Your true baby boy."

"Shut up, Clara!" Connor lunged to grab the papers, but I stepped back smoothly.

"Sixteen months ago," I continued, holding the paper up so the high-resolution corporate seal was visible to the front rows, "you underwent a certified, permanent vasectomy at the Fairview Fertility Clinic. The post-operative check confirmed a complete zero count."

The room went dead silent. You could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning.

Connor froze as if struck by lightning. The color instantly drained from his face, leaving him a ghastly pale gray. "W-what?" he stammered, his eyes wide with horror.

"A vasectomy, Connor," I repeated loudly. "Which means it is medically impossible for you to be the father of Alyssa’s child."

The crowd erupted into whispers and sudden murmurs. Cameras from the press section began flashing rapidly.

Connor turned slowly, mechanically, toward Alyssa. His eyes were wide with shock and betrayal. "Alyssa... what is she talking about?"

Alyssa’s lips trembled. She backed away a step, her face flushed with panic. "Connor, no! She’s lying! She forged those documents! Tell him, Betsy! Tell him she’s crazy!"

Betsy was trembling, looking back and forth between her son and the bride. "Connor... baby... she’s making it up—"

"Is she?" I asked. I pulled out a second document from the envelope. "This is the subpoena for a mandatory prenatal DNA test, ordered by the state court this morning. If you’re confident, Alyssa, you can sign it right now."

Alyssa dropped her bouquet. The white roses hit the marble floor, scattering petals everywhere. She didn't sign. She burst into tears, covered her face, and ran toward the side exit, her high heels clicking frantically against the floor.

"Alyssa! Stop!" Connor yelled, but his legs seemed to give out. He stumbled back against the altar rail.

"Oh, and Connor," I said smoothly, stepping into his personal space as the entire room watched him crumble. "That's only the first half of your gift."
