Chapter 5 - Custody, Claws, and Deception

The next three weeks were a whirlwind of legal maneuvers and bitter battles. Tyler’s attorney, a sleek, expensive defense lawyer named Richard Vance (no relation to my lawyer Karen), attempted every trick in the book to overturn the emergency custody order.

They claimed I was isolating the father, that the video was taken under duress, and that Dorothy was using the milk under genuine, albeit misguided, medical advice from an uncertified holistic practitioner.

However, Karen Vance was relentless. Every time they threw an accusation, we hit back with hard evidence.

We subpoenaed Dorothy’s medical records. What we discovered was staggering: Dorothy did not have active cancer or severe immune deterioration. She had been in full remission for over two years. Her claim that she needed breast milk for survival was entirely manufactured—a grotesque delusion fueled by online fringe forums and an unhealthy, codependent desire to exert control over her son and his new family.

Even worse, bank records obtained through financial discovery revealed that Tyler had secretly transferred $15,000 from our joint savings account to Dorothy’s personal account over the last six months to fund her expensive "holistic treatments" and pay off her personal credit card debt.

While I was staying home nursing our baby and worrying about paying for diapers, my husband was draining our life savings to feed his mother’s parasitic lifestyle.

The first preliminary court hearing was held in a quiet, solemn family court building.

Tyler sat across the aisle from me, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, looking calculated and polished. Beside him sat Dorothy, wearing a neck brace and looking frail, clearly attempting to gain the judge’s sympathy.

Judge Patricia Holloway presided over the hearing. She was a stern woman in her late fifties, known for her zero-tolerance policy regarding child endangerment.

“Mr. Vance,” Judge Holloway said, glaring over her spectacles at Tyler’s attorney. “I have reviewed the evidence submitted by the petitioner. I have viewed the video footage, reviewed the pediatrician’s notes regarding the child’s failure to thrive, and read the CPS investigation report.”

“Your Honor,” Tyler’s lawyer stood up, smooth and persuasive. “My client was acting out of deep distress for his ailing mother. He made a lapse in judgment, but he is a loving father who simply wished to help both his mother and his child. He believed his wife had an abundance of milk—”

“An abundance?” Judge Holloway interrupted, her voice dripping with ice. “He stole food meant for a four-week-old baby suffering from a specialized dietary condition, handed it to his adult mother, and explicitly stated on video: ‘The baby can have formula. Mom needs this more.’ Is that accurate, Mr. Vance?”

The lawyer hesitated, stammering slightly. “Well… the context, Your Honor—”

“The context is horrifying,” Judge Holloway stated firmly. “A father’s primary obligation is to protect and nourish his infant child. Mr. Vance displayed a callous disregard for his daughter’s physical survival in order to appease his mother’s bizarre, unscientific demands.”

Dorothy began sobbing loudly in the gallery, clutching her chest. “I was sick! I was dying! My son loves me!”

“Silence in my courtroom!” Judge Holloway slammed her gavel down. “Mrs. Vance, one more outburst and I will have you removed by the bailiff.”

The judge looked back down at her papers and delivered her ruling:

“Pending the final divorce trial, temporary sole legal and physical custody of Lily Vance is awarded exclusively to the mother, Maya Vance. The father, Tyler Vance, will have no visitation rights until he completes a mandatory 26-week parenting course and a full psychological evaluation. A temporary restraining order is issued against Dorothy Vance, prohibiting her from coming within 500 feet of the petitioner or the child.”

I let out a long, shuddering breath I felt like I had been holding for weeks. Beside me, my mother squeezed my hand tightly.

Tyler stared at me from across the aisle, his face twisted in utter disbelief and hatred. But I didn't care. The law had drawn a line around my daughter, and he could no longer touch her.
