Chapter 6 - Cornered Beast

Losing his job was just the first domino to fall.

By Wednesday morning, the local police department, under immense public pressure following the viral release of the video, officially opened a criminal investigation into the incident. The charge: misdemeanor assault, with potential escalation based on the physical force used.

Ethan’s world was crumbling at hyper-speed. His high-end clients pulled their portfolios from his management. His social club suspended his membership. The luxury apartment building where we were supposed to live together—a building owned by one of his firm’s partners—notified him that his lease was being revoked under a morality clause.

That evening, I returned to my parents' house after meeting with a victim’s advocate attorney. The sun was setting, casting long, dark shadows across the driveway.

As I stepped out of my car, I heard the screech of tires down the street.

A black sedan pulled up onto the curb, blocking my driveway. The driver’s door flew open, and Ethan stepped out.

He looked unhinged. The pristine, perfectly tailored man I had known was gone. His eyes were bloodshot, his hair disheveled, his shirt wrinkled and unbuttoned at the collar. He reeked faintly of alcohol.

"Emma!" he yelled, stalking toward me across the lawn.

I immediately stepped back toward my car, reaching into my pocket for my phone. "Ethan, stay away from me. I have a restraining order pending."

"You ruined me!" he screamed, his voice cracking with rage. He stopped ten feet away, breathing heavily, his hands trembling. "You ruined my life! My job is gone! My reputation is gone! I can't walk into a restaurant without people staring at me! Is this what you wanted? You wanted to destroy me?"

"You destroyed yourself, Ethan," I said, keeping my voice firm despite the terror hammering in my chest. "You did this the second you put your hands on me. You did this when you tried to paint me as insane."

"I loved you!" he shouted, stepping closer. "I gave you everything! A home, a life, a future! And you threw it all away because of a stupid joke!"

"It wasn't love, Ethan!" I yelled back, standing my ground. "It was control! You wanted a trophy you could step on whenever you felt like feeling big! You wanted me weak, dependent, and quiet!"

"Shut up!" he roared, lunging forward.

Before he could reach me, the front door of my house burst open. My father ran out, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker.

"Get off my property, Ethan!" my dad screamed, placing himself directly between Ethan and me. "Touch her again and I swear to God you won't walk away from this lawn!"

Ethan stopped, looking at my father, then at me. The realization that he no longer held any power—that his threats, his money, and his charm were completely useless—seemed to hit him all at once. He looked like a cornered animal, pathetic and dangerous.

"You think you won, Emma?" Ethan hissed, stepping backward toward his car. "You think this makes you strong? You're nothing without me. You'll always be the girl covered in cake."

"No, Ethan," I said, looking at him with a sudden, overwhelming wave of pity. "I’m the girl who walked away. You're the one left standing in the mess."

Siren lights flashed down the block—my mother had called the police the moment Ethan’s car pulled up. Hearing the sirens, Ethan cursed, scrambled back into his sedan, and tore away into the night, his tires smoking against the asphalt.

Twenty minutes later, the police took my statement. That night, an emergency warrant was issued for Ethan’s arrest for violating stalking boundaries and attempted assault.
