Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Dynasty

To destroy an empire, you must first understand how its bricks were laid.

The Williamson family legacy was built on a lie. Richard Williamson had inherited a modest construction firm in the late 1980s. Through aggressive lobbying, political favors, and cutthroat business practices, he transformed it into Williamson Development, a company that specialized in high-end suburban communities and luxury commercial spaces.

But their business model was outdated. They relied on heavy leverage—borrowing massive amounts of capital to fund projects, expecting high-end buyers to bail them out. With the recent economic shifts and rising interest rates, their luxury projects in Cherry Hills and downtown Denver had stalled.

They had millions tied up in half-finished concrete skeletons, and their lenders were starting to circle like vultures.

By Tuesday morning, Diego had been released on bail. The conditions of his release were strict: a temporary restraining order prevented him from coming within 500 feet of me or my condo. He was also barred from contacting me directly.

Naturally, he tried to bypass this by sending his mother as a messenger.

I was leaving a local coffee shop near my office when Victoria’s sleek, black Mercedes pulled up to the curb. The tinted window rolled down, revealing her face, masked behind designer sunglasses.

"Valerie," she called out, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Get in. We need to talk."

I stood on the sidewalk, refusing to move an inch closer. "We have nothing to talk about, Victoria. Any communication needs to go through my attorney."

Victoria sighed, removing her sunglasses to reveal dark bags under her eyes. The stress was already chipping away at her carefully painted facade. "Don't be dramatic, Valerie. Diego is devastated. He made a terrible mistake, yes, but you're ruining his life over a momentary lapse of judgment. The press is starting to ask questions. Do you know what an arrest record does to a businessman's reputation?"

"He should have thought about his reputation before he shattered a plate over my skull," I said, pointing to the neat row of black stitches visible near my hairline.

"He's willing to apologize publicly," Victoria pressed on, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "We will pay for your medical bills. We will even let you keep the condo. We won't ask for it anymore. Just drop the charges. Tell the prosecutor you fell."

I let out a soft, humorless laugh. "You really don't get it, do you? You think this is a negotiation. You think you can buy your way out of a felony."

"We can destroy you, Valerie!" Victoria’s polite mask finally slipped, her voice turning venomous. "My husband has connections in every major architectural firm in this city. If you don't cooperate, you will never design so much as a doghouse in the state of Colorado again. We will blackball you from the industry!"

I stepped closer to the car door, looking down at her. "Tell Richard to try it. Because by the time I'm done, the Williamson name won't carry enough weight to get a table at a diner, let alone blackball me. Enjoy your luxury car while you still can, Victoria. The lease is up."

I turned on my heel and walked away, leaving her sputtering in the passenger seat.

They thought they were the apex predators in this jungle. They didn't realize they were already caught in the trap, and I was about to pull the lever.
