Part 2: The Money Was Never for Lily

“The account was emptied six months ago,” the woman in the navy suit said.
The words hit harder than Ryan’s slap.
I stared at her.
“What?”
She opened the folder.
“My name is Sandra Pierce. I’m a financial investigator assigned to a fraud complaint involving donations collected for your daughter’s medical treatment.”
The room became silent except for Lily’s weak coughing from the bedroom.
Ryan looked like a man watching his world collapse in slow motion.
One of the officers stepped forward.
“Ryan Miller, we have a warrant to search the property and seize financial records related to the fundraiser.”
“No,” Ryan said quickly. “This is a misunderstanding.”
Sandra turned another page.
“Over one hundred and eighty thousand dollars was transferred from the donation account into several personal accounts under your name.”
I felt my knees weaken.
“Personal accounts?”
Ryan wouldn't look at me.
Sandra nodded.
“There were luxury purchases, gambling transfers, vacations, and vehicle payments.”
The kitchen spun around me.
Every night I had sat beside Lily’s hospital bed wondering how we would afford another treatment.
Every donation had been a promise from strangers who believed they were helping save my daughter.
And Ryan had spent it.
The officers began collecting documents from his office.
“Tell her,” Sandra said quietly.
Ryan finally looked at me.
At first I expected shame.
Instead I saw panic.
“It started small,” he whispered.
I couldn't speak.
“The first withdrawal was supposed to be temporary. I was going to replace it.”
“How much?” I asked.
He swallowed.
“Twenty thousand.”
Sandra corrected him.
“The total amount misappropriated was approximately one hundred sixty-three thousand dollars.”
I felt sick.
Lily called from the bedroom.
“Mommy?”
That tiny voice broke whatever remained of my marriage.
I walked past Ryan without another word.
Lily was lying in bed, pale and exhausted.
She reached for my hand.
“Are you crying?”
I forced a smile.
“No, sweetheart.”
“Did Daddy fix the money?”
The question shattered me.
I sat beside her and held her close.
Outside the room, I heard handcuffs click.
For the first time in months, Ryan sounded afraid.
For the first time in months, I wasn't.

Because my only job now was saving Lily.
And I was finally looking at the real enemy.
