Chapter 5 - The Legal Web Tightens

The office on the forty-second floor of the Vance Tower smelled of aged leather, expensive espresso, and absolute, unyielding power.

Evelyn Vance was not like the lawyers you see on television. She didn’t shout, she didn’t pace, and she didn’t wear flashy power suits. She wore a simple charcoal blazer, gold-rimmed glasses, and a expression of profound, surgical detachment as she played the video from David’s burner phone on her iPad for the third time.

“The physical assault captured in the final twelve seconds of this clip,” Evelyn said, her voice smooth and devoid of emotion, “constitutes felony domestic violence given your pregnancy. Combined with the premeditated nature of the setup, we can secure an emergency ex parte restraining order within the hour. He won't even be able to approach within five hundred feet of you, the house, or the hospital where you're due.”

She slid a thick stack of documents across the mahogany desk.

“What about the financial accounts?” I asked, scanning the headings.

“Frozen,” Evelyn replied simply. “Marcus’s audit team executed an emergency freeze on David’s personal accounts, the joint savings, and the business discretionary fund an hour ago. By the time David tries to buy a cup of coffee this evening, his credit cards are going to decline. Furthermore, we’ve attached a lien to the coastal condo he tried to purchase with your joint funds.”

My phone buzzed in my lap. I pulled it out. It wasn’t David or Maya this time. It was an email notification from our primary bank.

Subject: Notice of Account Status Change – Urgent Security Alert. All associated credit lines, savings accounts, and investment portfolios linked to David Vance and joint holders have been temporarily suspended pending judicial review.

A slow, cold sense of vindication bloomed in my chest. For months, I had felt small, trapped by my growing belly, my dependence on David’s income, and my mother’s endless, suffocating criticism. Now, sitting in this high-rise office overlooking the glittering expanse of the city, I realized something fundamental: they hadn't broken me. They had forced me to wake up.

“Sign here, Clara,” Evelyn said, handing me a heavy fountain pen. “This initiates the divorce filing, requests full custody of the unborn child upon birth, demands sole ownership of the marital home as compensation for financial fraud, and names your sister Maya as a co-defendant in the civil suit for tortious interference and conspiracy.”

My hand didn’t shake as I signed my name across the dotted line. Every stroke was firm, dark, and permanent.

“Now,” Evelyn said, taking the papers back with a nod of approval. “Let’s talk about how we handle the trap they set for you when they realize they have nowhere left to run.”
