Chapter 2 - The Ashes of Long Island

The cold night air carried the distant scent of rain as Maya wrapped Lily in a worn blanket inside her friend Chloe’s tiny studio apartment. Lily slept soundly, her little chest rising and falling, blissfully oblivious to the nightmare that had unfolded hours earlier.
In the bathroom, Maya stared into the mirror. Her skin was raw from scrubbing away the pink dye, but her eyes—once dull from four years of emotional abuse—sparkled with a new, terrifying clarity.
She held the silver orchid ring under the fluorescent bulb.
Fourteen years ago, on her mother’s deathbed, Maya had been given two things: this ring and a small black flash drive hidden inside a hollowed-out wooden music box. Her mother, Eleanor Vance (formerly Eleanor Vance-Ainsley), had been forced into hiding by powerful men after her grandfather’s mysterious death. Before her mind faded, Eleanor told Maya: "When you are backed into a corner where no one can hurt you worse than you’ve already been hurt... unlock the truth."
Maya hadn't cared about money or legacy. She had wanted a simple life. She had met Richard Vance—a charismatic mid-level accountant—and believed his promises of safety and love. Instead, she had walked straight into a gilded cage built of cruelty, gaslighting, and public humiliation.
Suddenly, Maya’s phone buzzed. It was a text from Richard.
Richard: You embarrassed me today, Maya. Look at the Internet. Everyone is laughing at you. Come back right now, apologize to my mother and Vanessa, and clean up the yard, or I’m freezing the bank accounts and filing for full custody of Lily.
Maya didn't cry. She didn't rage. She took a screenshot, saved it to her cloud drive, and blocked his number.
A few miles away, at an upscale cocktail bar in Manhattan, Julian Sterling sat in a private leather booth, tapping his index finger against a crystal glass of whiskey. Opposite him sat Thomas, his top operative.
"Her name is Maya Vance," Thomas reported, placing a thin dossier on the table. "Though 'Vance' is only her married name. Her maiden name was Maya Lin. Her mother was Eleanor Lin... formerly Eleanor Ainsley."
Julian stopped tapping. His dark blue eyes sharpened instantly. "Ainsley? As in Ainsley Global Conglomerate? The empire that vanished into receivership fifteen years ago after the sudden disappearance of Arthur Ainsley’s daughter?"
"The very same," Thomas confirmed. "Arthur Ainsley left 60% of his multi-billion-dollar energy and tech holdings to Eleanor, and by extension, her sole heir. But when Eleanor vanished, the board of trustees, led by a man named Gregory Vance—Richard’s uncle—declared her presumed dead and froze the trust. They’ve been skimming off the dividends for over a decade."
Julian leaned back, a dark, calculating smile touching his lips. "So Richard Vance thinks he’s abusing a penniless waitress, when in reality, he’s married to the rightful owner of the very building his firm rents."

"Precisely," Thomas said. "What are your orders, Mr. Sterling?"
Julian looked out the window at the Manhattan skyline. "Prepare the legal team. Get me in touch with the elder estate trustees. And arrange a quiet meeting with Mrs. Vance tomorrow morning. It’s time the heiress took her seat."
