Chapter 6 - Justice Served

The jury deliberated for less than three hours—a record turnaround for a high-profile attempted murder trial.

When the court reconvened for the verdict reading, the energy in the room was electric with anticipation. Rachel squeezed my hand tightly as Judge Harrison took her seat on the bench.

"Will the defendants please stand and face the jury?" Judge Harrison ordered.

Michael and Victoria stood up alongside their respective legal counsel. Michael looked visibly pale, his hands trembling slightly as he folded them in front of his prison jumpsuit.

The jury foreperson, a stern-looking man in his fifties, stood up and held the official verdict forms.

"In the matter of the State versus Michael Parker," the foreperson read into the microphone, "on Count One, Attempted First-Degree Murder of Lily Parker, we find the defendant... Guilty."

A sharp exhale rippled through the gallery.

"On Count Two, Attempted First-Degree Murder of Ethan Parker, we find the defendant... Guilty."

"On Count Three, Conspiracy to Commit First-Degree Murder... Guilty."

"On Count Four, High-Level Financial Fraud and Grand Larceny... Guilty."

Count after count, the word echoed through the courtroom like a hammer striking iron. Michael was found guilty on every single charge in the indictment. He closed his eyes, his head dropping forward as his legal team slouched in defeat.

The foreperson then turned to the second set of documents.

"In the matter of the State versus Victoria Sterling, on Count One, Attempted First-Degree Murder as an Accomplice... Guilty."

"On Count Two, Conspiracy to Commit First-Degree Murder... Guilty."

"On Count Three, Wire Fraud and Asset Laundering... Guilty."

Victoria collapsed back into her chair, burying her face in her hands, weeping hysterically as bailiffs moved in to cuff her wrists once again.

Two weeks later, the court reconvened for the formal sentencing hearing.

Judge Harrison allowed me to read a Victim Impact Statement before delivering the final judgment. I walked up to the podium, looking directly at Michael and Victoria, who sat in hand and leg shackles.

"Michael," I began, my voice strong and steady. "You thought you were the smartest person in the room. You thought my love for you made me blind, and that my devotion made me weak. You were wrong. A mother’s love for her child is a strength you could never comprehend or defeat. You tried to steal our future to pay for your failures. Instead, you have destroyed your own."

I turned my gaze to Victoria. "And to you, Victoria. You sacrificed your humanity for money that was never yours. You counted down the seconds of my son's life like it was a game. You will have decades in darkness to think about every single number."

Judge Harrison adjusted her glasses and looked down at the defendants with stern, unyielding eyes.

"Michael Parker, Victoria Sterling," Judge Harrison spoke, her voice booming off the timbered walls. "The coldness, calculating wickedness, and total lack of human remorse displayed in this plot are among the most monstrous acts this court has ever encountered. You showed zero mercy to an innocent child and a devoted spouse."

She slammed her gavel down with thunderous finality.

"Michael Parker, on the charges of attempted first-degree murder and conspiracy, I sentence you to two consecutive life terms in maximum-security state prison without the possibility of parole."

"Victoria Sterling, for your role as an active co-conspirator and accomplice, I sentence you to forty-five years in state prison without the possibility of early release."

As the bailiffs led the shackled pair out through the side doors—Michael turning one last time to catch my eye, finding only cold, unwavering indifference—a immense weight lifted off my shoulders.

The nightmare that began on a Friday night over a dish of green poison was finally, officially over. Justice had been meted out in full.
