Chapter 10 - A Happy Ever After

Six months later, the flowers in our front garden were in full bloom, painting the pathway in vibrant shades of red, yellow, and purple.

Inside the house, the smell of freshly baked lemon pancakes drifted through the kitchen. It was Saturday morning, and the sunlight poured generously through the windows, making the hardwood floors gleam.

Lily sat at the kitchen table, wearing a brand-new pink apron covered in cartoon kittens. She was using a plastic safety knife to slice strawberries for our breakfast, humming a cheerful little tune she had learned at school.

The front door opened, and the mail carrier dropped a thick envelope onto the foyer table. I walked over and picked it up, feeling my heart swell as I read the embossed gold lettering across the top: Superior Court of the State — Decree of Adoption.

Legal motherhood. Official, permanent, and rooted in unconditional love.

I walked back into the kitchen and set the envelope down on the counter. Lily looked up, her enormous blue eyes sparkling with curiosity.

“What’s that, Mom?” she asked, tilting her head.

I smiled, pulling out the official document with my name and hers linked side-by-side under the eyes of the law.

“It means,” I said, kneeling down and wrapping my arms around her in a warm, unbreakable embrace, “that no matter what happens, you are mine, and I am yours. Forever and always.”

Lily threw her small arms around my neck, burying her face against my shoulder. “Forever and always, Mom.”

We sat down together at the table, the plates piled high with warm pancakes and sweet strawberries. Lily picked up her fork, took a huge, enthusiastic bite, and laughed out loud as syrup dripped onto her chin.

There was no fear left in this house. Only sunshine, laughter, and a happily ever after that had been fought for, bled for, and won.
