Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

“You drugged her!” I yelled, my voice cracking with rage and terror as I gripped a jagged piece of fallen masonry in my right hand. “You used her like a laboratory rat in these woods!”
“Science requires controlled parameters, Mara,” Julian replied, his voice disturbingly reasonable, as if we were discussing household groceries. He reached inside his jacket, his fingers twitching toward a small, metallic injector pen clipped to his inner pocket. “And families are just fragile constructs until they are properly reinforced. Now, be a good girl and step aside. We're going home.”
He took one final step forward, his thumb pressing down on the cap of the injector.
Before he could raise his arm, a deafening chorus of sirens erupted directly behind him at the mouth of the alley. Three police cruisers slid sideways across the asphalt, their headlights blindingly bright, cutting through the darkness and pinning Julian in a cage of intense illumination.
“FBI! Federal Marshals! Drop your weapon and put your hands behind your head where we can see them!” multiple voices bellowed in unison through amplified speakers.
Julian stopped. He didn't drop the injector. Instead, he slowly lowered his hand, turning his head slightly to look at the wall of tactical officers advancing toward him with drawn weapons. For a brief second, his eyes flicked back to me—not with malice, but with a cold, detached curiosity, as if analyzing the final variables of an experiment that had unexpectedly failed.

“You're too late for the baseline, Mara,” he murmured quietly just as three federal agents tackled him to the ground, slamming his face hard against the wet pavement and securing heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.
As they hauled him up and pushed him toward the back of a black SUV, the red-and-blue lights washed over his impassive face, casting long, twisted shadows against the brick walls. I sank to my knees beside Ivy, pulling her into my arms as the first warm tears finally broke free, streaming down my face as medical personnel rushed down the alley with stretchers and emergency equipment.
