Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of the Empire

The conviction of Ethan Vance was only the first falling domino. Over the next three months, the legal storm swept through every person who had touched his conspiracy.
Julianna Mercer, faced with the overwhelming wiretap evidence and the recovered server data, took a plea bargain to avoid a life sentence. She was sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison for conspiracy to commit murder and corporate fraud. Her father, the Assistant District Attorney who had tried to erase the server evidence, was disbarred, indicted for obstruction of justice, and sentenced to seven years.
With Ethan permanently behind bars, the civil courts moved with lightning speed.
Because Ethan had attempted to murder us, the state's Slayer Statute was invoked in full force. Every asset he had ever owned—his share of the financial firm, his offshore accounts, his luxury vehicles, his retirement funds—was stripped from him and awarded entirely to Ryan and me as compensatory and punitive damages.
I sat in the office of my new legal team, reviewing the final estate distribution documents.
"Mrs. Vance," my attorney, a brilliant woman named Maya Lin, said with a broad smile, sliding a golden pen across the mahogany desk. "Ethan thought he was going to take your father's trust fund. In the end, he succeeded only in transferring his entire life's wealth into a protected, bulletproof trust for Ryan's college education and future."
I picked up the pen and signed my name on the final line—not Claire Vance, but Claire Sterling, reclaiming my maiden name once and for all.
"And what about the house?" I asked softly.
"Sold yesterday above asking price," Maya replied. "The proceeds have already been cleared. You never have to step foot in that town again."
I took a deep breath. The house where Ethan had tried to erase us was gone. The dark memories associated with that kitchen floor were sold off, replaced by liquid capital that would ensure my son would never have to worry about a roof over his head, a tuition payment, or a medical bill for the rest of his life.
Later that afternoon, I met Victoria Sterling at a quiet cafe overlooking the harbor.
She looked relaxed, wearing a light cream sweater, sipping an iced latte as she watched the sailboats gliding across the blue water.
"So," Victoria said as I sat down across from her, pushing a small velvet box across the table. "It's official. Ethan is in his permanent cell at Pelican Bay, and Julianna is heading to federal prison."
I opened the velvet box. Inside was a small, beautifully crafted silver pendant in the shape of a phoenix.
"What is this?" I asked, looking up at her.
"A gift from Apex Mutual," Victoria smiled. "Because of your courage in going into that office and securing the server drive, our company saved millions, but more importantly, we dismantled a major corporate fraud ring. Consider it a token of gratitude from me personally."
I held the silver pendant in my hand, feeling its cool weight. "I couldn't have done it without you, Victoria. You gave me a chance when everyone else thought I was crazy."
May you like
"You were never crazy, Claire," Victoria said gently, placing her hand over mine. "You were a mother fighting for her child. That makes you the most dangerous person on earth to a man like Ethan."
We toasted our glasses under the warm afternoon sun. The nightmare was finally over. The rebuilding was about to begin.
