Part 8: A Ring of Starlight

Six months later, the archival foundation downtown was fully operational.

The Vale Institute for Public Accountability—named not after my former husband, but as a permanent monument to the truth that had brought him down—stood proudly in the heart of the city’s financial district. As its executive director, I spent my days reviewing municipal records, helping victims of bureaucratic corruption find legal representation, and ensuring that no one else in the city would ever have to suffer in silence the way I had.

My life had expanded in ways I never could have imagined during my months hiding as a terrified maid in Blackmere House.

Yet, no matter how busy my schedule became, every evening ended the same way. A black sedan would be waiting outside the foundation doors at precisely six o'clock. Marcus would nod respectfully from the driver's seat, and I would slide into the backseat, returning to the sprawling estate that had become my true home.

One evening in early spring, as the rose gardens began to bloom in vibrant shades of crimson and gold, I walked out onto the back terrace carrying two cups of hot tea.

Roman was standing by the stone balustrade, reviewing a set of architectural blueprints for a new wing of the foundation. He looked up as I approached, the sharp, formidable expression of the city’s most feared power broker instantly melting into a warm, affectionate smile.

“Working late?” I teased softly, handing him one of the cups.

“Never too late for tea with you,” Roman replied, setting the blueprints aside and taking the cup from my hands. He pulled me gently against his side, his arm wrapping securely around my waist as we looked out over the sun-drenched gardens.

“The annual municipal audit report was released today,” I noted, leaning my head against his shoulder. “The city council approved our new transparency protocols unanimously. Not a single trace of the old syndicate's backdoors remains in the county servers.”

Roman smiled, taking a slow sip of his tea. “Adrian’s network was built on sand, Nora. It was only a matter of time before someone came along and washed it away. You’re the one who provided the foundation.”

“I only had the courage because I knew you were standing behind me,” I murmured.

Roman turned his body slightly, looking down into my eyes with an intensity that never failed to make my heart skip a beat. He set his teacup down on the stone ledge, then turned fully toward me, taking both of my hands in his.

“Nora,” Roman began, his voice dropping into a deep, steady resonance that carried absolute, unwavering devotion. “When you crashed that cart on my marble floor six months ago and cowered in fear, I knew instantly that my life was going to change. You walked into my house as a ghost trying to hide from the world. But every single day since then, you have brought light, strength, and grace into every corner of my life.”

My breath hitched. My fingers tightened around his.

“Roman...”

“I don't want to just be your protector, Nora,” he said, his dark eyes shining with profound emotion. “And I don't want you to just be a guest in my house. I want to spend the rest of my life walking beside you—as your partner, your equal, and your husband, if you’ll have me.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, opening it with a smooth, deliberate motion. Inside rested a ring crafted from platinum and delicate white gold, holding a brilliant, flawless diamond that caught the evening sunlight like a captured star.

Tears sprang to my eyes, hot and bright, but this time there was no sorrow in them at all. Only an overwhelming, beautiful wave of absolute joy.

I didn't hesitate for a single second.

“Yes,” I whispered, a radiant smile breaking across my face. “Yes, Roman. A million times, yes.”

He slid the ring onto my finger, the cool metal fitting perfectly, and pulled me into his arms. His lips met mine in a deep, tender, and fiercely protective kiss that sealed our past away forever and opened the door to a future filled with infinite light.
