Chapter 5 - The Ledger's Secret

Evelyn’s farmhouse sat at the end of a long, unpaved gravel driveway flanked by towering white pines. It was surrounded by dense woods, far off the main county road.

As soon as we pulled into the wooden barn behind the house, Evelyn lowered the automatic door, plunging us into shadow. She had converted the basement of her farmhouse into a fully equipped research hub: three monitors, encrypted servers, and walls covered in corkboards and timelines from her days as an investigative journalist.

She tucked Lily into a warm guest bedroom upstairs with a bowl of hot soup and a stack of old storybooks. Once Lily was sound asleep, Evelyn and I descended into the basement.

"Alright," Evelyn said, turning on a high-powered desk lamp over the blue folder. "Let's see what Derek was so desperate to burn down."

For four hours, we cross-referenced the handwritten ledger entries with public corporate registries and leaked international financial databases that Evelyn still had access to through her journalist contacts.

What we uncovered was horrifying in its scale.

Derek wasn't just a cog in the wheel—he was the primary architect of V.O.S.’s North American distribution node. For seven years, he had been funneling funds through small, regional banks across Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois, using fraudulent real estate transactions to clean the cash. Every single deed had my forged signature attached as the primary guarantor.

If the FBI raided our house today, they would find a paper trail that made me look like the kingpin, while Derek appeared to be an innocent spouse who had no idea his wife was operating a global laundering scheme.

"Look at this," Evelyn pointed to an entry dated six months prior.

Escrow Account 904 - Transfer to Marcus Vance - $120,000.

"Marcus Vance," I gasped. "The detective from our local precinct! Derek's golf partner!"

"He's on the payroll," Evelyn confirmed, her face darkening. "That's why Derek told you not to call the police. Vance isn't just protecting Derek; he's actively monitoring local dispatch to intercept any emergency calls coming from your address."

My stomach churned. "So we can't go to the local police. We can't go to the state troopers if Vance has eyes there."

"No," Evelyn said firmly. "We go higher. But before we do that, look at the last page of the ledger."

I leaned over the desk. The final page didn't contain account numbers or names. It contained a set of GPS coordinates and a timestamp scheduled for tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m.

Coordinates: 41.8781° N, 87.6298° W. Location: Private Hangar 4, Gary/Chicago International Airport.

"He's fleeing the country," I realized aloud. "He’s taking his physical liquid assets—whatever cash and bearer bonds he’s accumulated—and flying out on a private charter."

"And once he steps onto an international flight to a non-extradition country, he vanishes forever," Evelyn added. "Leaving you to take the fall for the entire V.O.S. network."

"What do we do?" I asked, feeling the weight of the world pressing down on my chest. "If we give this to the FBI now, it will take them days to verify it, get a warrant, and move. He'll be gone by then."

Evelyn looked at me, her eyes flashing with a fierce, brilliant light. "Then we don't just give them the ledger, Clara. We give them Derek on a silver platter. We set a trap."

"How?"

"Derek thinks you're terrified, alone, and defenseless. He thinks you're running blind. We're going to use the one thing he wants more than your silence: the physical ledger itself. Without this book, his offshore buyers won't release the final forty million dollars held in escrow. He needs this book to finalize his escape."

I looked down at the dark leather-bound book beneath the bright white light of the desk lamp. "How do we make him come to us?"

Evelyn reached into her drawer and pulled out a clean, un-trackable satellite phone. "You're going to make a phone call. And you're going to tell him that if he wants his forty million dollars, he's going to have to come get it himself."
