Chapter 6 - The Verdict and the Trap

The jury deliberated for less than three hours.
When the court reconvened, the silence in the room was so absolute you could hear the soft ticking of the wall clock above the judge's bench.
"Will the defendant please stand?" Judge Evelyn Vance commanded.
Richard Bell stood up slowly, supported by Marcus Kane. His hands trembled slightly, though he tried to maintain his proud, dismissive posture.
"On Count One: Felony Kidnapping of a Minor... how do you find?"
"Guilty," the jury foreman announced, his voice ringing crisp and unwavering.
"On Count Two: Aggravated Assault on an Incapacitated Person..."
"Guilty."
"On Count Three: Felony Extortion..."
"Guilty."
Count by count, the hammer of justice fell. Richard Bell was convicted on all eight counts. Mark Bell was found guilty of felony accessory to kidnapping and attempted extortion.
My mother, Denise, burst into hysterical, wailing tears, burying her face in her hands. Mark collapsed into his chair, covering his head. Richard stood paralyzed, staring at the jury as if he could not comprehend that a room full of strangers had dared to hold him accountable for his actions.
"The defendants will be remanded into custody immediately pending sentencing," Judge Vance ordered, slamming her gavel down with a sharp, final report.
Bailiffs stepped forward, pulling my father's hands behind his back and snapping cold iron handcuffs around his wrists. As they turned him toward the holding cell door, his eyes locked onto mine.
"Grace!" he screamed, his voice cracking with rage and panic, echoing off the mahogany walls. "You did this! You destroyed your own family! You're no daughter of mine!"
I didn't flinch. I stood up smoothly, adjusted my jacket, and looked at him with a quiet, profound pity.
"You're right, Dad," I said softly, though I knew he couldn't hear me over his own screaming. "I'm Ethan's wife. And Noah and Lily's mother. That's the only family I need."
However, victory in court did not mean the danger was entirely gone.
Three weeks after the verdict, while Richard and Mark were awaiting sentencing in the county jail, David Vance contacted me with urgent news.
"Grace, we have a problem," David said, stepping into my living room at the foothill estate. "Mark's ex-wife, Carla, just came to my office. She was terrified. Before Mark was taken into custody, he paid a heavy cash deposit to an unlicenced private security firm out of Salt Lake City."
My heart skipped a beat. "Why?"
"Because Richard had a backup plan," David revealed, setting a printed dossier on the table. "He knew there was a high chance he’d be convicted. He transferred two hundred thousand dollars into a secret offshore account in the Caymans three months ago—money Ethan missed because it was funneled through a shell company in Nevada."
"What was the money for?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
"It was a bounty," David said grimly. "If Richard was sentenced to prison, the money was to be paid to anyone who could secure physical possession of Noah. Richard believed that even from behind bars, if his family had custody of the male heir, they could force a legal fight over the trust’s distribution through third-party guardianship petitions."
I sat down heavily, my hand instinctively going to my throat. "They're coming for my son."
"They were," David corrected with a fierce, confident smile. "Until Carla panicked and brought us the bank records and the name of the operative Mark hired."
Rachel Monroe stepped out from the hallway, pulling a smartphone from her pocket. "Officer Porter and the FBI's violent crimes task force are already at the operative's location in Salt Lake City. The arrests are happening right now. Every cent in that Cayman account has been seized under federal asset forfeiture laws."

Rachel walked over, sitting beside me and placing a warm, supportive hand on my shoulder.
"The trap was sprung, Grace," Rachel whispered. "And your family just walked right into the steel jaws of a federal conspiracy charge. They are never, ever getting out."
