Chapter 6 - The Beggars at the Gates

Two weeks after Clara’s business went into liquidation, the final divorce hearing with Julian was scheduled.
Julian arrived at the courthouse accompanied by Chloe, who was wearing an oversized engagement ring that had likely been bought with my children's future college funds. Julian looked smug, confident that his legal team had successfully hidden his assets and that I would walk away with a nominal monthly child support check.
When I entered the courtroom, accompanied by Evelyn Vance and a team of four corporate litigators, Julian’s smile faltered slightly. He noticed my tailored suit, the diamond watch on my wrist, and the absolute lack of fear in my eyes.
"Natalie," he said, intercepting me in the hallway before we entered the judge's chambers. "Look, let’s be reasonable. You don't need to drag this out. I'm willing to give you ten percent of the house sale just to get this over with. You can use it to get a nice little condo for the kids."
I didn't even look at him. I looked at Chloe, who was staring at my designer handbag with naked envy.
"Save your breath, Julian," I said calmly. "We're going inside."
The hearing lasted less than an hour. Evelyn Vance didn't just present evidence of Julian’s infidelity; she presented a comprehensive, audited roadmap of his financial fraud. She laid out the exact routing numbers for the Cayman Islands account, the receipts showing he had used corporate funds from his employer to pay for Chloe's apartment, and a sworn affidavit from his company’s CFO—whom Arthur happened to know personally—stating that Julian was being terminated for corporate embezzlement effective that afternoon.
Julian’s lawyer sat in stunned silence as Evelyn dismantled their entire defense brick by brick.
"Your Honor," Evelyn concluded, "we are requesting full custody of the children, the entirety of the marital home, the immediate liquidation of the offshore accounts to be placed into a trust for the children, and a lifetime alimony mandate based on the defendant's true asset capacity."
The judge, a no-nonsense woman with a reputation for punishing financial fraudsters, looked at Julian with disgust.
"Motion granted," the judge ruled, slamming her gavel down. "Mr. Vance, you have seventy-two hours to vacate the marital property. Furthermore, this court will be forwarding these financial records to the federal prosecutor's office for review of tax evasion and corporate fraud."
Julian slumped back in his chair, his face grey. Chloe immediately pulled her hand away from his, her eyes darting around the room as she realized the golden goose she had stolen was now facing a federal prison sentence.
As I walked out of the courthouse, Julian ran after me, his tie undone, his composure completely gone.
"Natalie! Please!" he begged, grabbing my arm. Marcus, my driver, instantly stepped between us, his massive frame towering over Julian. Julian backed away, his hands raised. "Natalie, you can't do this to me! I'll lose everything! I won't be able to get a job! My family... your parents... they told me you wouldn't fight back! They said you were weak!"
I stopped and turned to look at him.
"They were wrong," I said simply. "And so were you."

I climbed into the back of the SUV, leaving him standing on the courthouse steps, a ruined man facing the consequences of his own arrogance.
But the final act of this tragedy was yet to play out. The family who had abandoned me on that freezing night had one final lesson to learn.
