Chapter 10 - A Whole Family

Six months later, the spring sun was shining brightly over a new home. We had sold the isolated house outside Portland; the memories attached to those woods were too heavy to carry. Our new house sat in a quiet, friendly neighborhood in Bend, Oregon, surrounded by families, parks, and the laughter of children playing in the streets.
The front door of our new home was painted a bright, cheerful yellow.
Inside, the kitchen smelled of freshly baked cinnamon rolls. I sat at the dining room table, working on a new set of illustrations for a children’s book about a brave little bear who conquered the dark. My hands, now healed with only tiny, faint white scars across the knuckles, were steady.
From the living room, I heard the sound of the front door opening.
"I'm home!" Tom’s voice called out.
This time, there was no hesitation. There was no freezing, no terror, no desperate whispers to hide.
Emma, now looking healthier and taller, her brown curls bouncing wildly, dropped her crayons onto the coffee table. She jumped off the sofa and sprinted across the hardwood floor, throwing her arms around Tom’s waist as he walked through the door.
"Daddy!" she cheered.
Tom laughed, lifting her up into the air and spinning her around before setting her down. He walked into the kitchen, leaning down to press a warm kiss against my forehead. "Hey. How’s the book coming?"
"Almost finished," I smiled, looking up at him. The lines of worry that had etched his face for years were gone, replaced by a deep, serene peace.
Emma walked back over to the table and picked up her drawing pad. She held up a newly finished picture for both of us to see.

It was a drawing of a bright yellow house beneath a smiling sun. In front of the house stood three people holding hands, drawn with vibrant, beautiful colors. Beneath the figures, in her neat, six-year-old handwriting, she had written three names: Daddy. Mama. Emma.
Tom reached over and took my hand, squeezing it tightly. I looked at my husband, then at the beautiful little girl who had chosen me to be her mother, and a deep, unshakable warmth filled my chest. We had walked through the deepest darkness together, and on the other side, we had finally found our way to being a whole family.
