Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

“Call her a gold digger again, Margaret, and I’ll have the sheriff lock you up for trespassing before you can finish packing your costume jewelry,” Mom said, her voice dropping into a chilling, commanding register.
Margaret flinched. For the first time in her life, the untouchable matriarch of the Whitmore family looked genuinely terrified.
“Evelyn… let’s be civilized,” Margaret stammered, her voice losing its aristocratic polish. “We are family. We share grandchildren—”
“You never considered Claire family,” Mom interrupted coldly. “You tolerated her because you thought she was weak. You thought you could throw her and my granddaughter onto the street like trash. Well, let me educate you on what happens when you cross a Carter.”
Arthur stepped forward with a clipboard. “Mrs. Whitmore, your eviction notice is officially active. You have thirty minutes to remove your personal belongings from the premises. Any items left behind will be treated as abandoned property and donated to a local homeless shelter.”
“You can’t do this!” Vanessa shrieked from the curb, her makeup running down her face. “Do you know who my uncle is? He’s a federal judge!”
“Then your uncle should know better than to associate with a woman who aids and abets corporate fraud,” Arthur replied without blinking an eye.
Daniel looked up at me, tears streaming down his face. “Claire… please. I’m begging you. We were happy. Remember our anniversary in Paris? Remember when Lily was born?”
I squatted down so I was eye-level with him. The man who once held all the cards was now a broken shell.
“I remember every single day I spent trying to earn your respect, Daniel,” I whispered, my voice steady and cold. “I remember every time you made me feel small so you could feel big. You wanted a trophy wife who would bow to your mother and smile while you humiliated me. Well, you got your wish—you’re completely free of me now.”
I stood up, turning my back on him.

“Arthur, have the movers clear out their remaining junk. Change all the smart locks. And notify the security team that if any of these three step foot on the property again, they are to be treated as criminal intruders.”
As we walked back to the car, I looked back one last time. Margaret was frantically trying to hail a passing cab with her bare hands, Vanessa was sitting on a suitcase sobbing into her palms, and Daniel was staring blankly at the ground, a fallen king in a kingdom that never truly belonged to him.
