Chapter 7 - The Subpoena and the Trap

Ten days after the eviction, the legal chess match reached its critical turning point.

Victoria Vance arrived at my father's estate unannounced just before dinner, carrying a thick leather briefcase that looked like it weighed fifty pounds. She didn't even wait to sit down in the parlor before she started dropping bombs.

"We caught them," Victoria announced, snapping open the briefcase and pulling out three certified bank ledgers stamped with federal routing numbers.

My father and I sat up straight on the velvet sofa.

"Explain, Victoria," my father commanded.

"David and his mother thought they were clever by routing the embezzled funds through a shell company called Apex Holdings," Victoria explained, tossing the papers onto the coffee table. "They thought that by using Margaret's maiden name as the registered agent, they could hide the asset trail from the court's preliminary freeze."

She pulled out a second set of documents—this one bearing the official seal of the United States District Court.

"What they didn't realize," Victoria continued with a triumphant grin, "is that Apex Holdings was flagged by federal authorities last year for international tax evasion through a subsidiary in the Cayman Islands. When my forensic accountants cross-referenced David's Social Security number with the subsidiary's corporate registry, we didn't just find your inheritance money, Sarah. We found three million dollars in untracked corporate kickbacks that David took from municipal contractors while overseeing the city library renovation project."

I stared at the papers, my breath catching in my throat. "Kickbacks? David took bribes?"

"Tens of thousands of dollars a month," Victoria said flatly. "He wasn't just abusing you at home, Sarah. He was running a white-collar criminal enterprise disguised as an architectural firm. His business partners had no idea. The board thought he was just arrogant—they didn't know he was a felon waiting to happen."

My father let out a sharp, incredulous laugh, shaking his head. "My God. The arrogance of the boy. He thought he was untouchable because he married into our name."

"And that brings us to tomorrow morning," Victoria said, leaning forward and resting her elbows on her knees. "David's divorce attorney filed an emergency motion for mandatory spousal support and shared custody, claiming David is destitute and financially ruined by your 'malicious legal maneuvers.' They requested an in-person settlement hearing at the county courthouse."

I felt a cold thrill run down my spine. "An in-person hearing? That means David has to show up under oath."

"Precisely," Victoria smiled, her eyes gleaming like polished steel. "He thinks he's walking into a room where he can bully you into a quiet settlement and a NDA. Instead, he's walking straight into a federal perjury trap backed by three distinct criminal indictments."

"What do you need me to do?" I asked, my voice completely steady.

"Show up in your cast, wear your Sterling family pearls, and let him dig his own grave," Victoria said smoothly. "The trap is set. All we have to do is wait for him to step inside."
