Chapter 10 - The Dawn

The night Maya was born, the sky over the Oregon coast was perfectly clear, glittering with millions of stars. The birth was peaceful, filled with the soft music we had chosen and the scent of lavender oil.

When she finally entered the world, let out a loud, healthy, demanding cry, and was placed directly onto my chest, the final remnants of the old shadow vanished from my soul.

She was perfect. Ten tiny fingers, ten tiny toes, and a head of thick, dark hair. She breathed deeply, her little chest rising and falling against mine, warm and solid and alive.

Thomas leaned over us, tears streaming down his cheeks, kissing my forehead and then pressing his lips gently to Maya’s tiny hand.

"Look at her, Nora," he choked out. "She’s beautiful. You did it."

The next morning, the sun rose over the ocean, casting a brilliant, warm golden light through the bedroom windows. Thomas was asleep in the chair beside the bed, his face peaceful. Maya was curled up in my arms, sleeping soundly, letting out sweet, tiny newborn sighs.

I looked out the window down into the garden. The white rose bush was in full bloom, its pristine petals catching the morning dew.

I looked down at my daughter, my heart so full of love it felt like it might burst from my chest. I thought of Liam. I always would. But the memory no longer tasted like ash and poison. It felt like a gentle, protective guiding light.

"We made it, Liam," I whispered softly into the quiet room, kissing Maya’s soft cheek. "Your story saved so many people. And your little sister is safe."

I leaned back against the pillows, holding my daughter close, watching the sunlight completely fill the room. The nightmare was entirely over. The truth had set me free, justice had cleared the path, and love had rebuilt my world from the ground up.

I closed my eyes and smiled, finally, beautifully, at peace.
