Chapter 6 - The Traitor Inside the Gates

A week later, I received an unexpected text message from an unknown number: 'Valerie, it's Natalie. Please meet me at the botanical gardens coffee shop at 2 PM. I used a burner phone. Victoria is tracking my regular phone. I have something you need.'

I hesitated. Natalie had stood up for me on the night of the attack, but she was still married to Diego’s younger brother, Julian. Was this a trap?

I called Evelyn, who advised me to go but to wear a hidden audio recording device and to ensure one of Evelyn's private investigators was stationed nearby.

The Denver Botanic Gardens were quiet on a Tuesday afternoon. I found Natalie sitting at a corner table in the cafe, a large scarf wrapped around her neck and sunglasses hiding her eyes. When she saw me walk in—with my visible scar and fading bruise—her eyes welled with tears.

"Valerie," she choked out, reaching across the table to touch my hand. "I am so, so sorry for what they did to you."

"Thank you for stepping in that night, Natalie," I said genuinely, sitting down. "You didn't have to do that."

"I did have to," Natalie said fiercely. "Because if I didn't, Diego might have killed you, and because... because I knew I was next."

She leaned in closer, her voice a hurried whisper. "Julian is just like him. The whole family is sick. Arthur raised his sons to believe that women are possessions. Julian hasn't hit me yet, but the emotional abuse, the threats, the control... it’s the same. When I saw Diego throw that plate, it was like looking into my own future. I knew right then I had to get out."

Natalie reached into her large designer handbag and pulled out a manila envelope, sliding it across the table beneath a stack of napkins.

"What is this?" I asked.

"Arthur and Diego keep a private safe in the home office at the Cherry Hills mansion," Natalie whispered. "Julian had the combination written down in his password manager. Last night, while everyone was out meeting with their high-priced criminal defense attorneys, I went into that office. I opened the safe. I made copies of everything."

I opened the envelope slightly. Inside were original physical ledgers, offshore bank account routing numbers in the Cayman Islands, and a second set of tax documents that looked drastically different from the ones Evelyn had uncovered during legal discovery.

"It’s the double-books," Natalie explained, her breath hitching. "They’ve been skimming money from their construction projects for years, hiding it offshore while claiming corporate bankruptcy to avoid paying their contractors and suppliers. There are names in there, Valerie. Judges they’ve bribed, city inspectors they’ve paid off to look the other way on structural defects."

This wasn't just financial desperation; this was systemic, long-term criminal racketeering.

"Why are you giving this to me, Natalie?" I asked, looking her deep in the eyes. "This will completely destroy your husband's family. It will destroy Julian too."

"Julian signed a prenuptial agreement that leaves me with nothing if we divorce," Natalie said, her jaw tightening. "But that prenup is void if the assets were acquired through criminal enterprise. I’ve already hired my own lawyer. I’m leaving him tomorrow morning. I’m giving you this because you have the strength to actually fight them. Together, we can take them down."

I looked at the envelope, then back at Natalie. The Sterling family thought they were an unbreakable fortress built on money and intimidation. They had no idea that the women they had oppressed and undervalued had just handed each other the keys to the kingdom.

"Let's do it," I said.
