Chapter 9 - The Promise Fulfilled

Two years later, the sun rose over a beautifully decorated backyard in Willow Creek. But this party was completely different from the one three years ago. There were no fake smiles, no high-priced catering, and no oppressive pressure to maintain a reputation.
There were colorful paper lanterns hanging from the oak trees, the smell of a homemade barbecue filling the air, and a group of genuine, loving friends from our new community laughing together.
It was Lily’s eighth birthday.
She was running around the yard with her school friends, wearing a bright purple dress, her cheeks flushed with pure joy. There were no bruises, no fears, and no flinching. When she saw me walking out of the kitchen with a tray of fresh lemonade, she ran full speed and jumped right into my arms, hugging me tightly around the neck.
"Happy birthday, my beautiful girl," I whispered, spinning her around.
"This is the best birthday ever, Daddy!" she cheered, before dropping down to run back to her friends.
Maya walked up beside me, slipping her arm around my waist. She was wearing a simple, elegant white dress, and a beautiful diamond ring sparkled on her left hand. We were getting married in the coming fall, right in this very backyard.
"She's so happy, Daniel," Maya said, resting her head against my shoulder.
"We both are," I replied, kissing the top of her head.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and noticed an email notification. It was a formal legal update from David. My parents had officially sold their estate in Texas and moved to a small apartment in another state, completely broken and isolated from the high society they had loved so much. Rebecca’s probation was still ongoing, and she was legally barred from ever entering the state of California.
I stared at the screen for a moment, expecting to feel a pang of bitterness or anger. But I felt nothing. They were just ghosts from a past life that no longer had any power over me. I deleted the notification, turned off my phone, and slipped it back into my pocket.

I looked up at the blue sky, feeling a profound sense of peace.
I kept my promise, Claire, I thought to myself, looking up at the fluffy white clouds. Our little girl is safe. She is loved. And she is going to be perfectly fine.
