Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

The next morning, the silence in our house was thick and heavy. Mark had slept on the couch, and when I came downstairs at six in the morning, he was already up, sitting at the kitchen table with a cold cup of coffee in front of him.

"I called a lawyer," Mark said as soon as I walked into the room.

I paused, my hand on the handle of the refrigerator. "A lawyer for what?"

"For a restraining order," Mark said, his voice flat and resolute. "And to find out what legal recourse we have against my mother for what she did to Lily. I didn't sleep last night. I stayed up watching the security footage from our front porch camera."

I walked over to the table. "What security footage?"

Mark flipped his laptop around to face me. "Yesterday, when Mom picked Lily up from kindergarten. She didn't just pick her up and drive to her house. She came here first."

He pressed play.

The black-and-white video footage showed Marguerite’s white sedan pulling into our driveway at 2:30 PM yesterday. Marguerite got out of the car, walked up to our front porch, and tried the door handle. It was locked. Then, she walked around to the side of the house, where we keep our spare tools and camping gear in a locked shed.

On the video, Marguerite pulled a heavy set of keys from her purse—a set of spare house keys Mark had given her two years ago when we went on vacation—unlocked the shed, and emerged thirty seconds later carrying a heavy metal chain and a brass padlock.

My blood ran cold as I watched the screen.

"She didn't just find that chain on her porch," I whispered, horror rising in my throat. "She took it from our shed."

"She planned it," Mark said, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "She went to our house, took the chain from our property, went to the school, picked up Lily, and took her back to her house specifically to lock her up. It wasn't an impulse. It wasn't because Lily was 'running toward the street.' It was premeditated."

Before I could process the sickening reality of what we were watching, my phone buzzed on the counter. It was a text message from Claire.

Don't talk to Mom today. She called Uncle Thomas and Aunt Patricia last night, telling them she’s going to press assault charges against you for the slap. She's also claiming you are an unfit mother and that she's going to file for emergency custody of Lily based on 'emotional instability.'

I stared at the screen, my hands beginning to shake violently. "She's filing for custody? On what grounds?"

"She has no grounds," Mark said, reaching across the table to grab my hand, but I pulled away. He flinched, but continued. "I spoke to a family law attorney at seven this morning. I sent him the DNA results, and I'm sending him this shed video right now. He said what she did constitutes child endangerment and unlawful restraint. If anyone is going to face criminal charges, it's her."

"I hit her, Mark," I said, panic starting to creep into my voice. "In front of forty witnesses. She has a physical mark on her face."

"She chained a five-year-old child to a wooden post like an animal!" Mark shouted, standing up. "Any jury, any judge, any police officer who sees that chain and reads that DNA report will see what really happened. You were protecting your daughter from a lunatic."

Just then, the doorbell rang.

My heart leaped into my throat. Mark walked to the front window and peered through the blinds. "It's the police," he said softly.

I stood frozen in the middle of the kitchen as Mark opened the front door. Two uniformed officers were standing on the porch. The older officer, a gray-haired man with a stern expression, looked down at a notepad in his hand.

"Are you Mark and Sarah Vance?" the officer asked.

"Yes," Mark said. "Officer, what's this about?"

"We received a complaint this morning regarding an alleged physical assault at 142 Elm Street yesterday afternoon," the officer said, looking at me. "Mrs. Marguerite Vance filed a report stating that Sarah Vance struck her in the face during a family gathering."

"Officer," Mark said immediately, stepping forward. "My mother lied to you. Or rather, she left out the reason why my wife reacted the way she did."

"Sir, we have to investigate all reports of physical violence against elderly citizens—"

"My mother chained my five-year-old daughter to her porch railing with a padlocked chain," Mark interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, filled with a terrifying, steady fury. "I have video evidence of her stealing that chain from my home earlier that afternoon. I have the certified DNA test proving my paternity, which she intercepted, opened, and hid so she could publicly abuse my child. Would you like to see the video before you decide who you're taking to jail today?"

May you like

The two officers exchanged a quick look. The older officer slowly lowered his notepad.

"Step inside, sir," the officer said. "Let's see that video."
