Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Web

The interrogation room at the county precinct smelled of stale coffee, old paper disinfectant, and lingering tension. Under the harsh fluorescent lights, Richard Pierce sat with his hands cuffed to the metal bolt in the center of the table. He wore an orange jumpsuit that seemed to swallow his former dignity, yet his posture remained rigid, his chin tilted up in stubborn defiance.
Across the metal table sat Officer Miller and a state prosecutor named Arthur Vance—no relation to the detective—who had made it his personal mission to put Richard away for the rest of his natural life.
I watched from the observation room next door, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Daniel. Through the one-way glass, we could see every twitch of Richard's jaw, every cold glint in his aging eyes.
“Let’s go over it one more time, Mr. Pierce,” Prosecutor Vance said, sliding a thick file across the table. Inside were photographs of the industrial drain cleaner, lab reports confirming the exact chemical makeup of the Snow Angel Glow Cream mixture, and the forged guardianship affidavits found in his home safe. “Your son’s forged signature, the premeditated purchase of industrial chemical solvents from a hardware store three weeks prior to Christmas, and your immediate flight from the scene. A jury is going to love this.”
Richard let out a dry, humorless chuckle. “You think you have me cornered, don't you? A clever little detective and a bitter prosecutor. My son will never testify against me. He loves his father too much.”
Daniel flinched visibly in the observation room, squeezing his eyes shut as a wave of shame washed over him. I reached out, gently wrapping my hand around his arm.
“He doesn't have that hold over you anymore, Daniel,” I whispered softly. “You broke those chains tonight.”
Suddenly, the door to the interrogation room swung open. Officer Gomez stepped inside, dropping a heavy cardboard box onto the table right in front of Richard.
“What is that?” Richard sneered, glancing down at the box.
“We executed a secondary search warrant this morning at your off-site storage unit downtown,” Officer Gomez said calmly, pulling out a stack of ledgers and external hard drives. “Turns out, Mr. Pierce, you weren't just meddling in your son’s family affairs. You’ve been running an illegal embezzlement scheme through your family’s real estate holding company for the past seven years—siphoning funds away from Daniel’s rightful inheritance and hiding them in overseas accounts.”
Richard’s face went instantly pale. The arrogant, untouchable facade finally cracked, his eyes darting frantically toward the ledgers spread across the table.
“That’s… that’s private property,” Richard stammered, his polished voice losing its composure for the very first time. “You had no right to search that unit without a specific financial warrant!”
“We got the warrant signed by a judge an hour ago,” Prosecutor Vance smiled coldly, leaning forward. “Not only are you facing decades in prison for attempted murder and child endangerment, but now we’re adding federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate forgery to the charge sheet. You’re looking at spending the rest of your life behind bars, Mr. Pierce. No parole.”
Richard slammed his cuffed hands onto the table, half-rising from his chair before the heavy guard pushed him back down into his seat with a firm grip. “You can't do this! I built this empire! I am the Pierce family!”
May you like
“No,” Officer Miller said quietly, leaning down so his face was inches from Richard's. “You were just a tyrant who terrorized your own blood. The Pierce family is out there right now, healing, and they don't need you anymore.”
As the guards hauled a sputtering, furious Richard away toward holding, the heavy metal door clicked shut, ending his reign of terror once and for all.
