Chapter 4 - Confrontation at the Party

By 2:00 PM, against my mother's frantic demands to cancel everything, the guests had arrived at the Foster estate. They had come expecting a lavish engagement party and a gilded celebration of family perfection.
Instead, they found two police cruisers parked in the circular driveway.
When Marcus and I walked through the front doors—holding a fully conscious, albeit shaken Lily in Marcus's arms—the living room fell dead silent. Dozens of relatives, business associates, and neighbors stood with champagne glasses in hand.
My mother stood by the fireplace, flanked by my father, who was sweating profusely through his designer suit, and Vanessa, who was nervously sipping wine while two police officers waited by the foyer.
"Clara, darling!" Elaine stepped forward, attempting her usual polished persona for the crowd. "Thank goodness! The police made such a absurd misunderstanding. Tell everyone Lily just wandered off—"
"Shut up, Mom," I said, my voice ringing clear across the silent room.
Elaine froze.
I walked directly to the center of the room, standing beneath the grand chandelier.
"I want to thank everyone for coming to my engagement party today," I announced loudly, securing the attention of every single guest. "And to celebrate my daughter Lily’s fourth birthday."
Vanessa glared at me. "Clara, don't do this here—"
"Thirty years ago," I continued, ignoring her completely, "my parents told all of you that my little sister, Danielle, drowned in Lake Erie. You wept with them. You brought them casseroles. You helped them raise money for a 'memorial fund' that paid off their mortgage."
Gasps rippled through the older relatives. My father’s glass slipped from his hand, shattering against the hardwood floor.
"Danielle didn't drown," I said, pulling out copies of the state documents the police had permitted me to keep. "My mother had Danielle placed in an institution because she was born with special developmental needs that didn't fit Elaine Foster’s image of a 'perfect family.' When the fees became too high, she abandoned her to state custody and faked her death."
"Lies!" Elaine shrieked, her mask completely slipping. "She’s insane! She’s trying to ruin us!"
"And last night," Marcus spoke up, his voice booming over the crowd, "when Lily found that old red box hidden behind the attic drywall during hide-and-seek, Vanessa fed her a sedative, locked her inside a commercial dumpster, and set a banner for her own child over Lily’s birthday."
The room erupted into shocked whispers and exclamations. Cousins pulled away from Vanessa; business colleagues stepped back from my father.
Detective Miller stepped forward, unclipping his handcuffs. "Elaine Foster, Vanessa Foster, Arthur Foster—you are under arrest for child endangerment, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and historic fraud."

As the steel cuffs clicked around my mother’s manicured wrists, she looked at me with pure, unadulterated hatred. "You ruined this family, Clara!"
"No, Mom," I replied softly, holding Lily tighter as she pressed her face into Marcus's shoulder. "You built this house on a grave. I’m just letting the light in."
