Chapter 7 - A New Foundation

The transition at Sterling Industries was swift, surgical, and overdue.
Within two weeks of taking over as CEO, I initiated a complete restructuring of corporate governance. I replaced the old guard of sycophantic executives with competent, ethical leaders who had been sidelined or passed over during my father’s reign. I instituted fair wages, transparent compliance protocols, and a corporate culture that valued integrity over intimidation.
Arthur Vance sat across from me in my new office—the very same office my father had occupied for decades, though it looked entirely different now. The heavy, oppressive dark wood panels had been painted a clean, modern off-white, and the walls were decorated not with expensive, lifeless art, but with framed crayon drawings Lily had made during her visits after school.
“The preliminary forensic audit of Mark’s shell companies is complete,” Vance said, sliding a thick blue binder across the sleek glass desk. “Federal prosecutors have offered a plea deal: full restitution of the remaining hidden assets in exchange for a reduced sentence. Given the strength of our evidence, Mark’s defense counsel advised him to take it.”
I opened the binder, scanning the summary pages without a trace of satisfaction or grief. Just closure.
“And my father?” I asked.
“Edward has officially retired to a modest condo downtown,” Vance replied, leaning back in his chair. “His health has taken a bit of a toll from the stress, but financially, he’s living off his personal pension—which you generously allowed him to keep, despite the board’s recommendation to freeze his personal retirement accounts as well.”
“I’m not a monster, Arthur,” I said quietly, closing the binder. “I just wanted them to stop treating people like disposable assets.”

“Well, you’ve certainly succeeded,” Vance smiled, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. “By the way, the quarterly board meeting is scheduled for tomorrow morning. Several major institutional investors have requested a formal audience with the new CEO. They’re quite eager to see what the new era of Sterling Industries looks like.”
“Tell them,” I said with a confident smile, “they won’t be disappointed.”
